Crater Lake Photo Gallery
This is Crater Lake National Park which is two hours east of Roseburg. The drive there is incredible and so is the lake. It is the deepest lake in the country and is inside a dormant volcano which blew it's top about 7,700 years ago. The 33 mile long rim road is at 7,000 plus feet, but is closed most of the year due to high snow falls (Approx. 50 feet a year).
This is Wizard Island a small volcano in the middle of Crater Lake. After being there this time of year, I would really like to try snowshoeing.
Here is Wizard Island in March 2000. The snow on the sides of the parking lot was about 6-7 feet high.
On the right is Mt Scott (8,926 feet) the highest peak in Crater Lake National Park. This was taken in March 2000.
Here is Crater Lake during Labor Day weekend 1999. Most of the snow is gone, and the sky was super blue which brought out more of the blue in the lake.
The lake is at an elevation of 6,176 feet and Wizard Island is at an elevation of 6,940 feet. The maximum lake depth is 1,932 feet. It is the seventh deepest lake in the world.
The thing sticking out of the water is the Phantom Ship of Crater Lake. It is the top of an ancient mountain.
This is a zoomed in picture of the Phantom Ship. The boat tours get really close to the island. I have not taken the boat tour yet.
