| For my project I spoke to Mike from Focus on the Family which is a research, psychology, counseling, institute, and ministry which sprung from Dr. James Dobson in 1977. Dr. Dobson recieved a Ph.D. in child development and was a professor of pediatrics at USC School of medicine. What he learned and saw from his studies and from his jobs gave him the thought of the need for Focus on the Family where he turned peoples "hearts toward home." As one of their radio slogans states.
Focus started in Arcadia, CA where Dr. Dobson started his radio program heard weekly on a few radio stations in CA including KKLA 99.5FM. Now it is an international organization located in Colorado with more then 74 different ministries and over a thousand employees. Focus has over 6,000 facilities worldwide. Focus provides referrals and professional crisis counselors free of charge to the general public in times of need. They also have several pregnancy crisis centers which are available for those who feel scared or want to talk over the choices involved in abortion/adoption. Focus on the Family is a Christian derived ministry and is founded on certain principles in the Bible. Some of their dedications in their organization are to defending the sanctity of marraige between and man and a woman, that children are protected and not abused or harmed emotionally or physically, defending unborn children, the elderly, the widowed, mentally handicapped, physically handicapped, etc., basically life is to be protected from conception to the grave. And mostly they are to their to protect the family as a God given gift to humankind and teach people to have and raise good families and make sure that home is a safe and secure place. As I stated before with the number of ministries focus has they include a broadcast ministry with several radio shows throughout the world including: Armed Forces Radio, "hearts toward home" with Dr. Dobson, Focus on the Family "health" program, and etc., they have several online ministries with resources available for all sorts of things including family issues, newlyweds, children and teens, prayer requests, pregnancy issues, and etc. They also have several magazines published including one for teen boys and one for teen girls for their struggles. And also several book organizations and ethical organizations worldwide. Focus has also donated several ultrasound machines to local hospitals and pregancy crisis centers. They have a website called "Think about it" dedicated to women in pregnancy crisis states located at http://www.thinkaboutitonline.com/ This also has resources for people that would want to volunteer their time at a center. Focus refers people in psychological counseling needs to over 1,500 therapists nationwide as well. They also have a healthcare site that is dedicated to health and well being and donates expensive equipment to needy hospitals. Focus has a center dedicated to those in college as well, in dealing with college level issues that can include depression, suicide, stress, pregancy, drug addictions, and etc. Probably the most dedicated aspect of focus though is that of parents and children. They have ministries for mom and dad becoming a better relationship, a center for single parents, a center for relationships between father and child and mother and child, for both towards child, and for child toward parents. A lot of these may all sound similar but each has different needs actually. Dr. Dobson's ministry also deals with the effects of pornography and the adult industry on our teen boys, and our married husbands. How it's destroying lives and destroying marraiges. The ministry is also dedicated to helping women with extreme sexual addictions which is becoming common in the high school, college scene, as more and more women are trying to fit in and get attention this way with men. A resource website for this can be found at http://www.pureintimacy.org/ Dr. Dobson was a member of the Attorney Generals Commission on Pornography in 1986.
