| In Singers book he talks about the problem of abortion. He confronts both sides of the argument from the conservative side and from the liberal side. He points out that most of the liberal arguments do not adequately destroy the point of the conservatives. However, he uses an ethical method to attack this point. He states that we must figure out the point in which the child feels pain or has some sort of self consciousness. He states that we must do the same for animals in this sense. He changes the premise as It is wrong to kill a potential human being, second premise being a human fetus is a potential human being, therefore it is wrong to kill a human fetus. He talks about that yes it does have the potentiality but at what point is it viable or really potential. If the child was to be removed at 3 weeks it would not survive. However, at 6 months it would be a premature child. He says that this still doesn't necassarily defeat the argument though. He adds that the fetus doesn't develop the ability to feel pain until roughly 18 weeks so his conclusion is it is OK to abort a fetus before 18 weeks since it has no self conscious of itself and can't know what is going on. He states it must be the mothers decision. He also talks about research stating that it must be done before pain is felt. However, he is concerned that this research if done on a child that will grow to full term might become disabled due to the research. He then goes into the realm of infanticide or killing infants because of population control or because of the fact they have a disability. He states they still have no self control or rational thought so one must choose for them.
In the next chapter Singer talks about Euthanasia he talks about the three types of voluntary, involuntary and non-voluntary. He feels that is should be OK for voluntary and under some circumstances OK for the other two, however, unlikely that those scenarios would occur. He states that if someone is going to go through extreme suffering or has no point left in their life and is accepting to being killed then he feels it is OK. However, the person must be fully aware and conscious of what they are doing. Unless they have a pre-written statement saying they want this. He also talks about several cases of children were the parents ended the childs life to stop the suffering of the children. Singer also uses the fact that in other non-suffisticated countries these children and adults would be dead. However, he adds a part in there about the fact that there might be a possibility of having such great pain management that a person doesn't even suffer during there death. He talks about Dr. Kevorkian using his death machine to allow people to kill themselves peacefully with the machine. It is themselve who pulls the switch not someone else. He states that we must think about the value of this persons life and whether they have a chance at a liveable life or not. Finally he talks about poverty and the fact that we have more then enough food and money in the world to take care of these people yet we do not so we can live in luxury. He states that there is an argument that we are commiting murder by not offering assistance to these people. Yet he states that traditionally murder has an intended target and requires you to actually physically do something to commit murder. Not by simply not doing something does this act usually commence. However, he states that because if we would have done something a person could have lived but since we didn't that person died. He then talks about how measly the USA is giving of it's per capita toward poverty. I find this extremely disgusting a sad considering the UK is beating us by almost 50 tims. Absolutely amazing. I definately think that if you have the money to give you should instead of lavishing in fur coats and maids. My attitude on abortion is that it is wrong. Due to my faith and in the Bible. I believe that since it is human tissue growing to become a human it is a human. I feel we are depriving the world of a possible cure to cancer or etc. I do not neccessarily look down on women who do this though. Unless of course they are doing it out of mere anger and have done it several times in the past. I feel that we need more education and more counseling in crisis pregnancies. We need to get the word out there that there are different options available and that people need to USE BIRTH CONTROL. It's not that hard to take a simple pill every day. And money cannot be used as an issue as you can go the county health office and they have FREE CLINICS. In the cases of rape, I still feel abortion is wrong however, I wouldn't look down on the women for doing it since I would never know what it is like to be in that situation. I still however feel we shouldn't punish a life because of someone elses actions. The one instance I will give to an abortion is that if the mother will die if the pregnancy is allowed to continue any farther. For instance a pregancy that implants to the fallopian tube would definately kill the mother if allowed to continue. When he talks about infanticide I don't even know where to begin. His concept and how he can somehow justify the argument sicken me and are just simply ludicrous. On Euthanasia I feel that if an ADULT is suffering intensely and in medical terms has a Glasgow Coma Scale of 15 being perfectly rational and able to make a sound judgement then it is OK. However, I feel rules must be put in place stating just like Singer wrote about where in Netherland two doctors must agree and there must be no likelihood of recovery. Or if someone pre wrote saying that this is there wish if they become altered or unable to make a decision I feel that is OK. For is someone is brain dead and unable to breath on their own they are dead. If the wouldn't be in a hospital they would die. And if it's their wish the cord should be pulled. However, I do not agree with someone killing another person without knowledge of their wishes unless their is no way they could live without being attatched to a machine then I feel this is fine. Basically we just need to have a set of rules laid out so this doesn't become a death game. In regards to poverty, it personally sickens me that we have more then enough food to go around the world yet it doesn't. I try to give as much as I can to organizations like World Vision and I feel all people should too. It doesn't take much 5 or 10 dollars a month can send packages to a family that has nothing and can help them out. If you have any spare money why wouldn't you help others. That's what humanity is about. Loving others. |
