I've done my time
Searching for someone else's dream
Wandering lost along broken highways
And stopping at all the wrong places
To sit and listen to barstool prophets say:
"I've been there
& I've seen it all"
I did not find my untold glory
As detailed in the words of another
But I have seen sunsets in the east
And watched the moon appear
In the midday sky
An unexpected beacon
Guiding me towards beauty
Lurking in the valleys of foreign lands
Hiding in tree holes
And etched into beach stones
Skipping lightly across the water
Only I left it there
Forgot to take it with me
As I built cairns in thankfulness
Sat peacefully by the rivers
Never fully realizing
That I was supposed to share
So this one's for the geisha
And the folks by Elvis' grave
A testament for the jungles
And the wheels of that southbound train
I remember Mexico
And I know I've seen Berlin
I've held the sun and kissed the angels
Before coming home again
To sit before the typewriter
And I think I hear its siren song
Staring blankly at the open face of Buddha
Writing words I know are wrong
