"Don't rule out working with your hands. It does not preclude using your head."
- Andy Rooney
"Save a little money each month and at the end of the year you'll be surprised at how little you have."
- Ernest Haskins
August 24, 2005What the heck are you kids doing out there? I get home from work to find an URGENT message from Geocities informing me that my account had exceeded its daily bandwidth limit and that folks were getting cut off - further investigation revealed a mere four visitors in the last 24 hours. Ahem. Four of you somehow managed to transfer 3 gigs of data through my page in a single day. I'm curious as to how this is possible; as the size of my website in its entirety is a whopping 12.4 megabytes. Severe muscle spasms in the index finger just as the pointer floated over the 'refresh' button? Someone decided to download every single file I have stored on the site 253.687741935483870967741935483871 times? Madness, I say. Madness. When not amusing myself with my calculator - I'm not even going to pretend like I did that in my head - I've been whiling away the hours at work. I've just completed my second day gripping on Hollow Man 2; the same show my sister is working on, by the by. As it is an IATSE show, it is somewhat more intensive than the previous shows I've worked on, but I guess I'm doing something right because I've been upgraded to leadman as of tomorrow. I'm not even sure what that entails, exactly. About the only thing I do know is that it means a raise... and that's always a good thing. The only other quasi-intersting bit of news to report is that rumour has it Pamela Anderson's (no I'm not going to link this; c'mon already) cousin is working with us. I'm not sure if I buy it, but there certainly is an argument to be made. At least it passes the time.
August 20, 2005Again a month passes with nary a word on my part. This whole working full-time thing really eats up too much of my day. I mean, what's a man to do with a mere nine hours of free time a day? I've become a huge advocate for beer and sleep, but that's just me. In fact, I'm sure there are those that would suggest that this is nothing new... and they're probably right. Here's the big news: we came in second at the Canadian Ultimate Championships this year. Five days in Winnipeg, a slew of hard-fought battles, one game in a baseball stadium and a silver medal in my pocket. Quite the ride. Next stop: Perth for the 2006 World Club Championships, baby! I've got to say, playing the final game in the stadium was one hell of an experience. Stepping out onto that plush green field was kind of surreal. Although the stands were far from packed with fans, there were enough folks out to make a sizeable roar - and the surge of energy blasting through me every time the crowd cheered is a feeling I'll likely not forget. Wanna see some pictures? I've even got choices for you:
That's all I've got for the moment, I'm sure there are more to come. Oh, wait. There is the celebratory photobooth, of course.Otherwise, I've been racking up the hours as a Grip on a TV movie titled "Merlin's Apprentice". Gripping is definitely a lot of hard work and lugging heavy equipment around, but there's a certain amount of thought required as well. Troubleshooting and problem solving skills are constantly being put to the test, and quick and creative solutions are generally the order of the day. I've heard Grips described as 'masters of the art of jerry-rigging', and though I wouldn't put myself in that category quite yet, I will say that I am adding a whole slew of new tricks to my repertoire. And I'm getting paid to work out. Righteous. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to get my ass outside. I've been cooped up inside all day catching up on long-overdue chores and don't want to miss what's left of the sunshine. I promise I'll be back before the end of the month. Really.
