Cats Make-up

Karen Dawson-Harding, make up designer has been with the CATS team since 1989 for their tour and was asked to create a look for the production. She took it all on to take into account of the wigs and costumes that where already designed. She designed the make up of the CATS actors.  She designed these make up charts below. They give detailed steps for colors and shading. EAch actor was given a makeup chart a photo of how they should look like and a bag of the correct cosmetics. New cast members have tutorials with Karen useing the drawing as a guide. They have to be taken throught each stage of their make up very carefully until all that remains is 1 eye.
The actors practice their makeup until they are spot on at applying it. But most of the actors have learnt how to do their makeup but it can even take a few months for them to get it perfect.

Make-up For CATS the video

There was a differance between the make up for the stage and  the make for the screen that is becuase of the very nature of the environment that the actors were working in. There are differences between stage lights and lights which are made for video productions, they have an effect on the
make-up as does that length of time and activity of the actors when
the make-up has been applied.
Some of the theatre designed make -up would have been too over done for the screen because when you watch a film they do close ups so it can't be too over done. In film it has to be blended. The most complicated make-up is for Skimbleshanks and Munkustrap they can take any where from 45mins to an hour and a half. But the easiest are the kittens, their make-up only takes about half an hour.
