Into Temptation

Each step forward, a constant decision
One foot in front of the other, perfect clarity of vision
Of all that awaits me
The pain and agony
And sorrow of alone . . .
With each footprint I see and know
How far I'll be from the warm embrace
And loving face and encircling arms . . .
How exposed I'll be to the harms . . .
My own weakness, my own fear
Forty days out here
The memory I desperately hold of a time
When you told me your love
And what I'm thinking of now
As I take another step
Closer to hunger
Closer to nothing left
And I scream out, "Stop!" to the silent hills
Every part of me wills me to pick up my foot
Pick up my foot
Pick up my foot
Determined to know and see
The power of right after we
Spend forty days together
Apart
Severed
But the heart of the matter is
You've already done it too.
And the steps weren't any easier for you.
