Hunting

What is hunting?
To me hunting is more than the taking of an animal. The taking of the animal is just the last step in a long process. Hunting is sharing the great out of doors with a good friend, spending time in the woods or in a field. Hunting is conservation in it's best form. The responsible hunter is and was and will always be the first conservationist. If the hunter does not conserve then they will have nothing to hunt. The responsible hunter is also an expert in the animal that they are hunting. For me to hunt deer I must know as much as possible about the deer that I am hunting. To hunt pheasant then I must know about pheasants, where they live, what they feed on, and where they live. I must know when they are most likely to move and where they are going to move to. I must be able to think like the animal that I am hunting so that I know when to hunt and where to hunt. A hunter also must have an artists heart so that they can admire natures beauty. Another part of hunting is knowing when NOT to take an animal. Another big part of hunting is the preperation for the hunt. In my case the start of deer hunting is the day after deer season ends and is a year long process. Hunting is also the best way that the Game and Recreation Departments have of managing game animals so that they do not overpopulate an area. What I do to an animal that I hunt is much more humane than what mother nature does when she takes an animal. My own personal opiopn is that hunting touches a chord deep in our souls and conects us with our past. As I said in the beginning the taking of an animal is just the last step in a long line of steps leading up to that point.
