Edward Sullivan is the father of Robert and Wilfred Sullivan, and Anita Hucksam, and Barbara Galvin; the grandfather of William M., Rita, Clint, and Jon Galvin, Robert, Betty Ann, Joseph, John, Thomas, and Steven Sullivan, and Anita Cihocki, and Barbara Mione.
Edward is the great-grandfather of David, Kerry, Jeremy, and Matt Galvin, Tara Weber, and Stacy, Emily, and Eddie Sullivan, and Ann, Clare, Lynn and Christine Mione, and Rob, Bunny, and David Cihocki; and the great-great grandfather of Ryan Weber.
Edward Sullivan was born on August 17, 1873, at 85 Church Street, Boston. His family lived in South Boston (East 7th Street), where his brother William was born in 1879.
Edward's father was also named Edward Sullivan, and his mother's name was Mary Donovan. They were both born in Ireland and emigrated to the United States probably in the 1860's. They were married in Boston on July 4, 1869. He was 23 years old at the time and she was 28. It was the first marriage for each. Edward Sullivan's (senior) occupation at the time of his marriage was a waiter. Subsequently he worked as a porter.
Edward Sullivan's (junior) grandparents on his father's side were Michael Sullivan and Ellen (maiden name unknown). His grandparents on his mother's side were Timothy Donovan and Joanna (maiden name unknown).
Edward also had a sister named Mary but little is known about her. He is related to Hannah Duffy (possibly her nephew).
Edward served as the best man at the wedding of his brother William, who married Bridget Garrahan, at the Immaculate Conception Church on Haverill Street, Lawrence, on June 24, 1903.
Edward was a member of the New Hampshire National Guard in at least 1894. He received medals for marksmanship (one is shown at left) from the Guard in that year.
Edward married Florence Rita LeBlanc on June 29, 1914 in Boston. It was the first marriage for each. He lived at 3 Warrenton Street, South Boston, at the time of his marriage.
Edward and Florence had the following children:
Edward and his family lived at 38 Colonial Avenue in Dorchester until approximately 1919 when they moved to 6 Wooddale Avenue in Mattapan. In about 1938, the Sullivan family moved to 125 W. Selden Street in Mattapan. Edward was known for flying the flags at his home on W. Selden Street every Sunday during World War II.
Edward was employed by the Boston City schools as a custodian throughout his adult life. He had a wide variety of duties that included operating and cleaning the boiler and shoveling coal as well as snow.
He was a skilled handyman and carpenter. Along with a family friend and his sons Bob and Willy, Edward built a two-bedroom cottage on Hubbard Road, adjoining Robbins Pond, in East Bridgewater. The Sullivan family enjoyed many summers at the cottage until it was sold around 1946.
Edward loved the outdoors and particularly fishing. He went fishing in Boston--deep-sea fishing boats left the T Wharf (by State Street) every day during the summer--and at Nantasket Beach. He also enjoyed reading the newspaper and smoking a pipe. He was a loyal Red Sox fan.
Edward Sullivan died in Boston City Hospital at age 72 on July 27, 1945, of acute bilateral pyelonephritis. His age at death was erroneously reported as "68". Edward is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Mattapan.
