Chapter 4 the child as mathematician

is number conservation the appropriate focus for understanding children's aquisition of number? Some maintain that a knowledge of number, such as one-to-one correspondence is present from early infancy. A series of experiments shows how infants and pre-verbal toddlers shows how they respond in numerically relevant ways to displays they could successfully process in colour or shape relevant ways...the experiments indicate that neonates can detect numerical differences in arrays consisting of small numbers.
