Ice Skating in Florida

I thought about calling this area of my "website" a newsletter, but that seemed a little ambitious since, according to my Geocities statistics, none of the pages receive more than a few hits per month. Anyway, this is the first entry.

The Lord of the Rings story required a long time to read. I started it last year and only finished it two days ago. I'm now reading the long appendix affixed at the end. I saw a little of the first movie and it looked good. I like fantasy, though I'm really a loyal fan of science fiction, and that includes movies. I've learned not to anticipate an exceptional, or even faithful, screen adaptation of any written fiction, but Rings appears to be a rare case in which they did justice to a masterpiece.

I've been playing the state lottery lately. No luck, though. It seems to me it would be neat to print all the possible combinations of one of the games. Florida Fantasy Five entails only 376,992 possible combinations and so would be practical. Using a small font, a thousand selections per sheet would require only 377 sheets, less than a standard ream. Anyway, you could hold this stack of paper and think, "I have in my hands all the Fantasy Five drawings that ever have or ever will occur." That is, until they change the game.

Italian scientists are attempting to clone a human being. Several, if I'm not mistaken. One is supposed to be here in early 2003. The rest of the scientific community regards their claim as far fetched, though the technology ostensibly exists. I predict they will succeed, but the surviving clones will suffer from problems nobody expects. It's a topic that interests me since I place a lot of confidence in the work being done at the Matrix Institute in New Hampshire. (Their website is located at www.IntuitiveFlash.com.) Scallion's book, Notes from the Cosmos, makes a lot of sense if you believe that the universe holds a lot more than what logic alone can reveal.

I went ice-skating today for the first time. Neat, since I live in Florida. The facility is a temporary service called Ocala On Ice. For me, the greatest difference between ice-skating and roller-skating is that roller rinks offer a lot of lateral friction and thus forgive a certain amount of imbalance. Ice rinks offer relatively little lateral friction and you really have to watch it if you're like me and you're new and untalented. The rink included a web cam attached to the ceiling but I can't find a website that features it.

I drink coffee sans sugar or cream. It took only a few days to wean myself. Now I can't stand to sweeten coffee unless the sweetener is artificial, and I don't sweeten it at all. I feel I've defeated part of what is likely, in the long run, a dangerous sugar addiction.

I've been watching the Osbournes. I wanted to go into detail here but, for the life of me, I can't explain what about it compels me to watch. I do like it when the rich and influential walk on earth with the rest of us and remain relatively decent.

That's it for this entry.
