Marine Pollution

Internationally cigarette butts are the most abundant marine litter item, followed by hard plastic pieces (such as bottle tops) and foamed plastic. In South Africa statistics  show that the major litter component is plastic. It is not uncommon to see hundreds of plastic shopping bags littering an area.

Tangled fishing line and fishing hooks also cause great problems, often ensnaring marine birds, or injuring them badly.

Seals, dolphins, turtles and marine birds die frequently from ingesting plastic bags with seals also getting themselves entangled in bags or box  tape. Unable to free themselves, they often die through constriction.
