More Whittier
This nice beach is near Salmon Run  2, a public park in Whittier Alaska. The water seemed as warm as California beachwater (miserably swimable). Caution--rough road.
Below we have Ryan and James at Portage Lake . Whittier and Portage are on opposite sides of Portage Pass. It's also a bottleneck between land masses, an ithsmus connecting Kenai Peninsula to the mainland. By tunnel or by pass, the 2.7 mile journey takes us from one weather system to another.
Midsummer in Whittier
Midsummer at Portage
Whittier gets lots of rain. Warm wet air comes off of Prince William Sound. Portage is the north side of that same ridge. Flat areas get a few hours of light around here in winter. It's golden, glistening, sunset-style light. The Sun is low on the horizon, even at noon. The dark side of an object never sees direct sunlight. This gulch is part of a basin that extends ~300 miles north to Mount McKinley.
