This nice beach is near Salmon Run 2, a public park in Whittier Alaska. The water seemed as warm as California beachwater (miserably swimable). Caution--rough road. |

Below we have Ryan and James at Portage Lake . Whittier and Portage are on opposite sides of Portage Pass. It's also a bottleneck between land masses, an ithsmus connecting Kenai Peninsula to the mainland. By tunnel or by pass, the 2.7 mile journey takes us from one weather system to another. |

| Whittier gets lots of rain. Warm wet air comes off of Prince William Sound. Portage is the north side of that same ridge. Flat areas get a few hours of light around here in winter. It's golden, glistening, sunset-style light. The Sun is low on the horizon, even at noon. The dark side of an object never sees direct sunlight. This gulch is part of a basin that extends ~300 miles north to Mount McKinley. |
