How to conjugate regular -AR, -ER and -IR verbs in the preterite tense.

Verbs that do not follow these patterns in the preterite tense are irregular verbs and are conjugated in a different way which usually has no pattern and is learned through memorization and repeated usage.

The preterite tense is a form of the past tense.  Spanish has two past tense forms with specific rules re: when to use each one.
