August 2000 was the last time I saw Metallica live. Three years between Metallica shows is way too long. It's safe to say my anticipation for these club shows was at an all time high. I won tickets to the first show, and I lucked out and found another metclubber to swapped tickets to the second show. CKY, made famous from the television show Jackass, opened up for Metallica at the first club show. I've actually seen CKY before and they are actually pretty good. So it was going to pretty cool to see them again. Apparently, each band member got to pick the opening act for each of the four Fillmore shows. CKY was James' choice. |

The setlist was unbelievable. Five songs from Kill Em All; Four songs from Puppets; Blackened; New song - Frantic; Harvester (first time live since 95?); No songs from Load or Reload and only one song from the Black album. Like I said, the setlist was unbelievable. Metallica can play a setlist without Nothing Else Matters, Sandman, Until I Sleep, etc. I hope this trend continues. That's not to say that I don't like Load/Reload, but I didn't mind not hearing Sandman for the 1000th time. If there was any notion that Metallica had lost its edge, it was proven untrue on May 18th. Metallica was full of energy, intensity, and the overall vibe the guys had on stage was amazing. True, they showed a little rust, had the occassional fuck-up, whatever...Metallica even looked the happiest I have seen them on stage in quite a while. Metallica is back!!! |

Club gig #2 was just as good as the first night. Systematic (obviously Lars' choice) opened up. They were actually pretty fucking good. Mental note to self: remember to pick up a copy of Systematic cd. Lars even came out on stage with Systematic. Metallica changed the setlist around which is a good sign for the summer tour. I will never get tired of hearing Blackened live. That songs absolutely fucking rocks! Frantic sounded even better the second time I heard it. I was a little disappointed that was the only new song they played the 1st two nights. It was really cool to hear Leper Messiah, it's been a while since they played that live. Damage, Inc. was a great way to end the show, even though James didn't remember all of the lyrics! |

After the show, I hung around waiting for Eric to come out. Before we left, I saw that Kirk came out and signed some autographs. He was in a hurry, so I didn't really bother him, but I did manage to snap a picture of him. What a great couple of shows. Metallica is definitely not going anywhere anytime soon. Getting a taste of live Metallica made me only want more. I would have loved to stay the whole week and go to all four shows. Man, I can't wait till this summer! |
