The amazing price deflation of handheld computers
photo by Jeff Opal, taken on 1-Dec-2003, with "Rhonda" assisting (holding the two handhelds)
I bought both of these handhelds new from stores.  The one on the left was my very first handheld, This Palm IIIxe cost me $278 (tax and everything) in March of 2000.  The handheld on the right cost me $90 when I bought it 44 months later, in November of 2003.  The one on the right hence cost 90/278 = .32 what the one on the left cost me.  However, the one on the right is a FAR better value (at least 4 times better I would say).  This is a value-for-price improvement of around TWELVE times!
I've seen this pattern repeatedly with all kinds of computer products.  This deflation seems especially rapid in the handheld computer market.
