The photo below shows what the trunk looks like when open.  I keep many important supplies in it, including a roll of toilet paper, spare ball-point pens, loose-leaf paper, a spare shirt, cigarettes (I don't smoke, but like to give a few to a smoker sometimes), some AAA batteries, canned pet food (useful for capturing stray dogs, I've discovered) etc...  Many of these items I keep in the four #10 sized food-cans visible in the photograph.
Incidentally, the key shown dangling from the fastener on the left side is the key that came with the trunk, for the trunk's built-in lock, which I don't use.
The photo below shows a trunk that I keep in the rear of my 1988 Honda Civic Wagon (behind the rear seats).  This photo shows the trunk chained to the car.  The chain goes down into the spare-tire well.  Inside the well, the chain is attached to a metal loop (around .25 inches thick) that protrudes up, using a lock exactly like the one showing in the photo.  Both locks use the same key.
