This photo shows what the driver's side rear tire of my 1988 Honda Civic Wagon looked like on 9-Apr-2002, sixty seconds after I sprayed the tire with a solution consisting of water and one tablespoon of a liquid type of laundry detergent (SUN brand, from Wal-Mart, show on the left).
After spraying the mixture evenly over the tire's surface, a leak in the tire has become clearly visible 60 seconds later, where a "mound" of tiny soap bubbles has formed on the tire.  In the photo, the "mound" is oozing down the tire.
The leak was being caused by a piece of a screw (one with a sharp point at one end). The screw-piece was around the size and shaped of a grain of rice.  I thought it was a small nail until I pulled it out of the tire and got a close look at it.
The leak was causing the tire to lose around 10 pounds of pressure every 24 hours (the tire is supposed to have 32 pounds of air in it).
Before succeeding at finding the leak this way using this liquid laundry detergent, I tried a solution of water and ordinary hand soap.  That solution didn't work at all.
The squirt bottle I used is shown on the left.  It is filled with the solution I used.
