A msiquoting by O'Neill of the Boston Globe's biography of Kerry
p. 58
This is a significant misquoting of the Globe's biography (John F. Kerry).  Like his concocted quote attributed to Kerry (which in truth appears no where in Tour of Duty) that has Kerry saying he ordered warning shots be made with .50 caliber weapons, this too appears to be a concocted quote attributed to another book as a means to portray Kerry as an incompetent commander. On page 58 of Unfit for Command O'Neill says,
According to the biography written by Boston Globe reporters, Kerry simply butchers a small sampan in a free-fire zone because it would have been dangerous to approach.
O'Neill outrageously gives no page number where this view of the incident can be found in the book.  I carefully studied all the words I could find in the Globe's biography that address this unfortunate incident in which Kerry's men opened fire on a fishing boat, killing a small child.  I could find no words at all that express any view of the incident like what O'Neill expresses in the above-quoted words.
I believe that much of O'Neill's motive for giving this misquote was to distract readers away from absurd assumptions underlying his description of the incident, such as his assumption that readers should believe O'Neill when he wrote that it was Kerry's responsibility to carefully watch the boat's  radar screen.
