| O'Neill puts a made-up quote in Kerry's mouth | |||||||||||||

| This is a significant misquoting that has a very obvious purpose of casting doubt on Kerry's Silver Star medal, which Kerry got for jumping off his Swift Boat onto a beach and chasing an enemy soldier armed with an M-79 (Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher), then shooting and killing the armed man. On page 33 of Unfit for Command O'Neill says that Kerry told author of Tour of Duty (Douglas Brinkley) that, |

| As Kerry exlained to Brinkley, he wasn't about to go chasing after the Vietnamese running away. | |||||||||||||
| O'Neill's note in the back of the book gives page 158 of Tour of Duty as his source. However, when one looks at that page one finds a very different quote attributed to Kerry: | |||||||||||||
| "We were not all about to go crawling on the beach to get our asses shot off." | |||||||||||||
| The questions naturally arise: "Is page 158 where the quote is? Could O'Neill merely have given an incorrect page number?" This possibility can easily be excluded by using the software of the http://www.amazon.com site to search Tour of Duty. When I did this, using words like "chasing", "running", and "beach", I couldn't find any quote anywhere in the book even vaguely similar to what O'Neill said is in the book on page 158. | |||||||||||||
