| This is a significant misquoting, intended to cast doubt on the legitimacy of Kerry's third Purple Heart award. Having argued that shrapnel Kerry got in his buttocks likely got there earlier in the day from a grenade Kerry threw into a rice bin, on p. 87 O'Neill assures readers that Kerry's third Purple Heart was for that wound only. However, this is what an August 22, 2004 article in the New York Post says about that claim by O'Neill: |

| "Unfit for Command" attacks Kerry over the injury, saying that he got the award, and a trip out of Vietnam because of it, for a "self-inflicted" shrapnel wound from the grenade that went off earlier in the day. "The minor bruise on this arm would never have justified a Purple Heart and is not mentioned in the citation," the book says. But Kerry's Purple Heart award does mention both the shrapnel and arm wounds. | |||||||||||||
| Also, Tour of Duty says on page 317 that that Purple Heart was for the arm wound: | |||||||||||||
| Along with a third Purple Heart for the injury to his right arm, Kerry was also awarded a Bronze Star Medal for his bravery in the line of duty that March 13 on the Bay Hap River.. | |||||||||||||
| Please note: I decided not to put up a page about this apparent lie by O'Neill until I had a more credible source to cite than Tour of Duty, which appears to occasionally fudge the truth in Kerry's favor (e.g., notice that if the reporter's words are all accurate than Brinkley failed to tell readers that the citation also mentioned the shrapnel in the buttocks). | |||||||||||||
