Many fish died in the LSU lakes recently
photos by Jeff Opal, taken in June of 2003
One recent Saturday morning a friend of mine told me he had seen large numbers of dead fish floating on the surface of the LSU lakes.  This got me very curious, so I invited him to show me.
We got on our bicycles and rode to the lakes (which are around 1.5 km from our apartments).  I was amazed by what we found.
Masses of thousands of dead fish had accumulated a several areas of the shore.
This top photo shows a close up of some of around 100 dead fish.
This bottom photo shows one of areas of shore where large numbers of dead fish had accumulated.  The whitish mass extending from the shoreline out into the water is all dead fish.  Individual dead fish can be clearly seen near shore nearest the camera.
Many big fish (10-30 inches in length) could be seen swimming near the surface.  They exhibited obvious distress.  The big one shown in the photo seemed near death and unable to move much at all except for spasms.
<== This large fish was still alive.  A side fin is poking up into the air.
