My new hang-down shelves that I made with my new drill press
photos by Jeff Opal, taken 10-Aug-2003
This photo shows my first creation using my new drill press.  The shelves shown are hanging down between two wall-mounted cabinets in my kitchen.
I made these because I need more shelf space, and I noticed that I wasn't using the space above my sink for anything.  Since I've decided to keep the window closed at all times, I didn't even need this space to reach across when opening/closing this window.  So...I've filled the space with these shelves.
The topmost board is around ten inches longer than the gap between the cabinets.  The extra five inches resting on top of the cabinets on each side allows that board to stay securely across the top of that gap.
That top board has four 3/4 in. (in diameter) holes drilled through it, a positions directly above each of the four dowel rods.  At each end of the board, a 4 ft. chain has been threaded through the two holes.
This is a drill press I bought from a Home Depot store in Baton Rouge.  I plan to make lots of shelving with it.
This is what the same shelves look light with morning light coming through the window.
