The handhelds display of the Sears store in The Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge (on Bluebonnett Ave)
photo by Jeff Opal, taken around 19-SEP-2003
I've examined the display of handheld computers at this Sears store three times so far.  The second time was around Sep of 2002, when I purchased a keyboard for the HandEra 330 that I owned and used at that time.  Then, the display was next to where the wall-mounted flat TV sets are displayed.
When I visited the display the day I took this photo, it was in a different place: around 15 feet east of the prior location, out of view of that location (on the other side of an office divider type of wall).  I almost didn't find its' new location.
The display has always (by "always" I mean: every time I, Jeff Opal, have looked at it) had a small number of handheld computers (around 7).  It appears to me that this Sears store isn't investing much display space or salesperson effort or training in trying to sell handheld computers.  Some evidence: salespersons I've spoken to at this store seem to know no more than the average American does about handheld computers.
However, I suspect that the store is selling enough of them to justify having such a small display.  I suspect that many persons have bought handhelds from Sears, and that such persons typically know they could get the exact same device from another store in their city, but they buy it from Sears because Sears has such a good reputation with them.  That is, they feel safer buying the machine from Sears, because they have bought many other products in the past from Sears and have been pleased with how Sears has treated them.
