As soon as it hit big over in New Zealand, question of being able to surf on the mainland started to surface. Since surfing was the beginning of it's own subculture, another way to hang out with friends and stay active if you weren't sporty became a must. People started to think up ways to surf on land, thus the skateboard was created. In the 1960's people were able to 'surf' in the winter as an after sport once it became cold. This was known as skateboarding. Soon the art of skateboarding disappeared and only the really serious skaters practised it. | |
By the 1970's skateboarding once again started to emerge into the public view. The first main skate team was the Zephyr Boys. There was a major drought which left swimming pools empty and bare. Skaters soon dropped into these pools and began to skate on the curves and coping. This was what then created 'vert' skating. This vert skating then gave way to half and full pipes.
Nowadays, skateboarding has become and in 'fad', as well as become one of the largest extreme sports today. It has spawned it's own subculture and created it's own brand of music, clothing, and tastes. Competitions are held as well as videogames created in order for the everyday non-skater become Tony Hawk and land the hardest and toughest trick imaginable. |
