So often we think discipleship is a huge endeavor requiring extreme heroic sacrifices. We think it is major activities that require us to be public in what we do. Discipleship most often is just the opposite. it is in the small moments that we live the gospel.
Take the picture above. It is a older picture of David Harmon one of our core members and Venus, who works at the woodery and is a great support to our community. This is an older picture and many would chuckle because Venus now has short dark hair and tattoos...okay no tattoos, I just like to torment Venus when I can.
Living L'Arche as I have mentioned before is not in great theological disscusions. It is in the little moments of relationship. It is in sitting with someone as they have a cigarette, it is sharing a laugh, it is setting the table, it is talking about the color of long skinny balloons or the type of aircraft that flies from one airport into another. It is in sharing a coffee, or tending to the feet at night to apply cream when the foot is to rough, or needs to be bandaged. It is in the helping with routines of personal hygiene, to sharing tears over the beath or sickness of a family member. It is sitting next to one another looking at the newspaper, or laughing in delight at the reaction of Tom Krysiak when he buys his Sunday paper and goes into his happy dance. It is in the tender moments of Dayspring and you hear a voice struggle to sing along, comforting the tears that come with holiday seasons.
These are the moments of L'Arche discipleship. Being Christ for one another in the present moment. This is living the Advent season and the story of Christ coming into the world. So look for the small moments where we can be Christ for one another.
