Date of birth: Nov. 26, 1816.

Birthplace: Augusta, Georgia.

U.S. Military Academy: Class of 1837 (46/50) Infantry.

Pre-war experience: Seminole War - 3 wounds, resigned from Army in 1838 but reappointed in 1840, Mexican War - gravely wounded, commandant of cadets at West Point, frontier duty, resigned from U.S. Army on Dec. 20, 1860.

Rank: Brig. General, Major General.

Major Battles and Campaigns: Pensacola (Brigade); Vicksburg Campaign with Johnston (Brigade); Chickamauga (Reserve Corps), Atlanta Campaign - killed in action at Battle of Atlanta (Division).

Date of death: July 22, 1864.

Place of burial: Augusta, Georgia.
