Date of birth: Oct. 2, 1821.

Birthplace: Rogersville, Tennessee.

U.S. Military Academy: Class of 1842 (12/56) Artillery.

Pre-war experience: Garrison duty, instructor at West Point, resigned from U.S. Army in 1845, professor at Cumberland Univ. and Univ. of Nashville.

Rank: Major - Art., Brig. General, Major General, Lt. General.

Major Battles and Campaigns: Columbus, Ky. and Belmont, Mo. (heavy artillery); Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River (Brigade); Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Atlanta Campaign - wounded at Ezra Church (Division); Franklin, Nashville, Carolinas Campaign (Corps), surrender of Johnston.

Post-war achievements: Professor, insurance business in St. Louis, chancellor of Univ. of Mississippi 1874-1886, park commissioner of Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park.

Date of death: August 30, 1908.

Place of burial: St. Louis, Missouri.
