Birthplace: Fredericksburg, Virginia.

U.S. Military Academy: Class of 1838 (42/45) Infantry.

Pre-war experience: Frontier duty, Mexican War, Indian fighting, Utah Expedition, resigned from U.S. Army on June 6, 1861 but document was not forwarded to War Dept. - therefore he was dismissed on June 25, 1861.

Rank: Major - Inf., Colonel - 53rd Virginia, Brig. General, Major General.

Major Battles and Campaigns: Cumberland Gap, Richmond, Perryville; Vicksburg Campaign - captured (Division); Missionary Ridge, Atlanta Campaign, Nashville, Carolinas Campaign, Bentonville, surrender of Johnston.

Post-war achievements: Civil and mining engineer.

Date of death: August 15, 1888.

Place of burial: Fredericksburg, Virginia.
