A Major Battle in the Campaign for Atlanta

Date of Birth: Sept. 29, 1831.

Birthplace: Gerry, New York.

U.S. Military Academy: Class of 1853 (7/52) Artillery.

Pre-war experience: Served in the U.S. army in Florida, instructor at West Point, under a leave of absence in 1860 he taught at Washington University in St. Louis.

Rank: Captain - 1st U.S. Artillery, Major - 1st Missouri Infantry (reorganized as Artillery), Brig. General, Major General.

Major Battles and Campaigns: Wilson's Creek (Lyon's Chief of Staff); commanded various occupational troops in Tennessee and Missouri; Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, Nashville (XXIII Corps); operations in North Carolina and surrender of J.E. Johnston (commanded Department of North Carolina).

Post-war achievements: Secretary of War under Johnson while serving in the U.S. Army, recommended Pearl Harbor as a naval base, Superintendent of West Point, Commander-in-Chief of the Army 1888-1895.

Date of death: March 4, 1906.

Place of burial: Arlington National Cemetery.

Became one of 43 fully commissioned Brigadier Generals from Illinois during the Civil War.
His troops captured Wilmington, NC and defended Franklin, Tennessee in 1864.
Schofield Barracks, a US Army Post about 30 miles north of Honololulu, Hawaii, is named after him. (Ill)
