Leonidas Polk


Date of birth: April 10, 1806.

Birthplace: Raleigh, North Carolina.

U.S. Military Academy: Class of 1827 (8/38) Artillery.

Pre-war experience: Attended University of North Carolina, resigned from Army in 1828, Episcopal minister, Missionary Bishop of the Southwest, a founder of the University of the South.

Rank: Major General, Lt. General.

Major Battles and Campaigns: Commanded Department No. 2 - defenses of the Mississippi River; Belmont, Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga (Corps); Atlanta Campaign - killed in action at Pine Mountain, Georgia (Corps, Army of Tennessee).

Date of death: June 14, 1864.

Place of burial: Originally in Augusta, Georgia, re-interred in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1945.
