Birthplace: Scott County, Kentucky.

U.S. Military Academy: No.

Pre-war experience: Attended Shurtleff College, lawyer, Illinois state senator, delegate to Republican convention nominating Lincoln, Washington Peace Conference delegate.

Rank: Colonel - 14th Illinois, Brig. General, Major General.

Major Battles and Campaigns: New Madrid, Island No. 10 (Division); Corinth (Brigade); Stones River, Chickamauga (Division); Chattanooga, Atlanta Campaign (XIV Corps).

Post-war achievements: Governor of Illinois 1868-1872, U.S. Senator, presidential candidate for Gold Democrats 1896.

Date of death: Sept. 25, 1900.

Place of burial: Carlinville, Illinois.
