Birthplace: Wilmington, N.C.

U.S. Military Academy: no.

Pre-war experience: Seminole War, Georgetown College, lawyer, Florida legislator, commissioned into Regular Army in 1846, Mexican War - lost an arm at Chapultepec, frontier duty, Indian fighting, Utah Expedition, commanded Depts. of Oregon and New Mexico, youngest line colonel when he resigned from the U.S. Army on May 13, 1861.

Rank: Brig. General, Major General.

Major Battles and Campaigns: Romney Expedition; command in Southwestern Virginia; Vicksburg Campaign - cut off from Pemberton after Champion's Hill (Division); Atlanta Campaign; Franklin, Nashville (Corps); Carolinas Campaign, surrender of Johnston.

Post-war achievements: New York banker, Egyptian military service 1869-1879, author.

Date of death: Dec. 30, 1886.

Place of burial: St. Augustine, Florida.
