Date of birth: Sept. 22, 1833.

Birthplace: Charleston, S.C.

U.S. Military Academy: Class of 1854 (17/46) Artillery.

Pre-war experience: Frontier duty, resigned from U.S. Army on Feb. 20, 1861, no relation to the Virginia Lees.

Rank: Captain, Major, Lt. Colonel, Colonel, Brig. General, Major General, Lt. General.

Major Battles and Campaigns: Fort Sumter, Seven Days, Second Manassas, Antietam; Vicksburg - captured (Chief of Pemberton's Artillery); commander of cavalry in the Department of Mississippi, Alabama, West Tennessee and East Louisiana; Atlanta Campaign (succeeded to command of Hood's Corps); Franklin, Nashville - wounded, surrendered with J.E. Johnston.

Post-war achievements: Farmer, State Senator in Mississippi, first president of Mississippi State College, commissioner to organize Vicksburg National Military Park, commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans 1904-1908.

Date of death: May 28, 1908.

Place of burial: Columbus, Mississippi.
