Birthplace: near Deckertown, New Jersey.

U.S. Military Academy: Class of May 1861 (17/45) Artillery-Cavalry.

Pre-war experience: student.

Rank: 1st Lieutenant, Captain - 5th New York Inf., Lt. Colonel - 2nd New York Cavalry, Colonel - same, Brig. General.

Major Battles and Campaigns: Big Bethel - wounded (5th N.Y.); Second Manassas (2nd N.Y.); Stoneman's Raid, Aldie, Middleburg, Upperville (Brigade, Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac); Hanover, Hunterstown, Gettysburg (3rd Division, Cavalry Corps); Kilpatrick/Dahlgren Raid; Atlanta Campaign - wounded (3rd Division, Cavalry Corps, Army of the Cumberland); "March to the Sea," Carolinas Campaign (3rd Division, Cavalry Corps, Military Division of Mississippi).

Post-war achievements: Minister to Chile (twice); politically active as a Democrat and as a Republican.

Date of death: Dec. 4, 1881.

Place of burial: West Point, New York.
