Date of birth: Nov. 30, 1830.

Birthplace: Leeds, Maine.

U.S. Military Academy: Class of 1854 (4/46) Ordnance.

Pre-war experience: Bowdoin College, assistant professor at West Point, ordnance duty.

Rank: Colonel - 3rd Maine, Brig. General, Major General.

Major Battles and Campaigns: First Manassas (Brigade, Heintzelman's Division); Peninsular Campaign - wounded twice at Seven Pines, Second Manassas, Antietam (Brigade, II Corps); Fredericksburg (Division, II Corps); Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chattanooga (XI Corps); Atlanta Campaign - wounded at Pickett's Mill (IV Corps); Fall of Atlanta, "March to the Sea," Carolinas Campaign, Bentonville (commanded the Army of the Tennessee from July 1864).

Post-war achievements: First commissioner of the "Freedman's Bureau," bank director, served in Indian country, helped found Howard University, superintendent of West Point, various departmental commands, aided to establish Lincoln Memorial University, author, speaker.

Date of death: Oct. 26, 1909.

Place of burial: Lake View Cemetery, Burlington, Vermont.
