Birthplace: Clark County, Indiana.

U.S. Military Academy: no.

Pre-war experience: Mexican War - private in 3rd Indiana, commissioned into regular Army in 1848, garrison duty.

Rank: 1st Lt. & Capt. - 1st U.S. Art., Colonel - 22nd Indiana, Brig. Gen.

Major Battles and Campaigns: Ft. Sumter; Wilson's Creek (Brigade); Pea Ridge (3rd Division); Corinth (4th Division, Army of Mississippi); shot ex-commanding officer Gen. William Nelson; Stones River (Division, Army of the Cumberland); Chickamauga (Division); Atlanta Campaign, "March to the Sea," Carolinas Campaign (XIV Corps).

Post-war achievements: Colonel - 23rd U.S. Infantry, served in Alaska and the Modoc War.

Date of death: Nov. 30, 1879.

Place of burial: Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.
