The Hamburg ‘Devils &
Dust’ show turned out to be the penultimate night of the European tour
after being rescheduled from earlier in the month. Bruce rewarded the
home town crowd for their patience with tour premiers of ‘Janey, Don’t Loose Heart’ (on electric piano),
‘Spare Parts’ and ‘Growin Up’. Other rarities
included ‘Highway 29’ and ‘Highway Patrolman’. The pump-organ ‘Downbound Train’ stayed from its debut during the
previous show as the opener.
Only
some of those performances are included on this single DVD of select
songs from the show. Luckily, the supreme ‘Janey…’
is among the songs captured when the filmer
chose to turn on his camera. The tracks are mostly complete, but some
are faded out a little early. The footage is shot from the left of the
theatre, which gives a side view for the guitar numbers and a head-on
view of Bruce at the piano. The picture quality is mercifully free of
the digital noise that mars most of the videos from the tour, but there
is some pixilation when the filmer uses maximum
zoom. It is reasonably steady and carefully filmed, with a good colour balance. The audio is very good for a
camcorder source.
Unusually
for camcorder video, the transfer is anamorphic widescreen. The disc
has been authored with interesting menu designs and despite being incomplete, it is a very nice presentation of the
show.
