Everything I Know About GMing I Learned from Babylon 5

(and one thing from Gene Roddenberry)

  1. Hard choices make great adventures.
  2. History is important.
  3. Not all who help the main characters are their friends.
  4. Not all who oppose the main characters are villains.
  5. Know the end before you start.
  6. Everyone should have a secret.
  7. The truth has three sides.
  8. Even villains have lives.
  9. The goal of the villain is not to frustrate the heroes.
  10. Just because something is legendary doesn't mean it's true.
  11. The enemy of the enemy has his own goals.
  12. So do the allies of the heroes.
  13. Choices should always have consequences.
  14. The heroes make their own stories.
  15. Even gods have gods.
  16. There can be multiple overlapping plotlines.
  17. Things can hide in plain sight.
  18. There should always be questions.
  19. It's not about the episodes.
  20. No matter how complex the plot, the basic idea should be simple.
  21. Every great story eventually involves time travel.
  22. It is the task of the heroes to find the choice the universe does not want to offer.
  23. There should be signs and portents.
  24. Start small, end big.
  25. Sometimes the heroes must fail at first.

  26. (from Gene Roddenberry) If you can't write down a page full of story ideas, you don't have enough to begin a game.
