Southern Flying Squirrel
In August of 2002, we were walking along the bank of an old stripmine pond near Pine Furnace, PA.  This particular pond used to have a decent population of beavers but in March 2002 we found the bodies of at least two of them near their hut (which hasn't been very obviously renovated in over 6 months) so they might have moved to a different area or been killed off by predators.
Most of the trees around the pond have woodpecker holes in them and when we bumped this particular tree with a fishing pole, one of at least two flying squirrels came out to investigate. I was really surprised because, since they're nocturnal, I just figured I'd probably never see one unless I actually went out at night and
looked for one...well, they proved me wrong....

Close-up of the squirrel - you can see the coloration really well in this picture
The squirrel from the back - you can see how different the tail is from the other kinds of squirrels in our area
