San Gabriel OHV is located about 10 miles North of
Azusa on Hwy 39. (Note: Don't turn at the bridge!) For details click
the link above. It's located in above a reservoir so it's like driving in a lake bed. The upper half is a little rockier, the lower half is sandier. There isn't much here that I would call "difficult". There was one little hill that was pretty steep with a couple of huge holes in it. I didn't even try it, Jeff made it in his Rubicon. (no pics though) |

The main attraction at San Gabriel is supposed to
be some giant mud pits. They are easily visible from the turnouts
on Hwy 39. But... when you get down into the OHV there is a line of "CLOSED" & "UNDER CONSTRUCTION" signs. I would guess that at least 1/3 of the OHV area is currently off limits. Kinda makes me wonder where all the fresh tracks in the "closed" area came from? Enter at your own risk, I suppose. |

We did manage to find a couple of mud holes to drive in.
The both had a lot of water left in them, but we tried to empty
them. The Liberty handled pretty good and did a decent job of keeping up with Jeff's Rubicon. I'm not sure if I'd try any real off-roading with a stock Liberty though. The Daystar 2.5" lift kit helps a lot. Overall, San Gabriel was okay. A bit on the small side with the "closure". It's fun but I wouldn't drive more then an hour to get there. |
