Herculiner Testing
Herculiner, is a product that I have wanted to test for quite some time now. I bought the bonus pack, which consists of a gallon of Herculiner and a smaller can to go with it, a 2"brush, 3 rollers, gloves, and a video. Things you should get that aren't included are: a small paint tray, a mixer that is drill operated is almost a must and you might want to get some tack cloth for prep. It ran me $199 (can). The extra small can is for an 8 ft. box, a gallon will do 2 coats on a 6 ft box. The video is pointless, if you've read anything about Herculiner, than you already know what's on the video just basic instructions, no tips or nothing. But here is were you'll get the tips. The reason I went with Herculiner is that their name proceeds them. They claim their product wont chip, flake or peel, sounds good to me lets check er out, shall we? We shall! |
Prep is simple enough scuff up the surface you wish to apply it to and wipe clean with a tack cloth. Getting down business get a friend to help you out, you don't want to get this stuff on you and chances are if you have a friend helping you the odds drop to 50/50, not bad eh? But seriously a friend going ahead and getting in the corners really helps, especially in a Jeep body. Plus he can help you tape the body off, a good tape job shows in the finished product, so if your really picky, like myself, you'll do that before your friend comes over. Any holes or bolts should be covered with tape, I heard Vaseline on the heads of bolts works but I'm a sceptic, as the Vaseline would get on the roller and end up putting spots in the liner. I just taped them and it turned out fine
Once everything is taped off, have at her; just DON'T GET ANY ON YOU! We actually, surprisingly made out all right and managed to get minimal amounts on us. Start from the front middle and work your way out and where I'm running it around the outside edge, I didn't bother doing that till dead last because I knew I'd be leaning in it and get it all over me. Take your time and get all the corners and cracks. Once the first coat is on let it set for 1-4 hours. With the rest of the coats you can be more loose and get the high traffic areas and build them up. Between coats we stored the rollers in the freezer, so that we could reuse the rollers and brushes, we just put them in a plastic bag and they kept fine for the couple of hours between coats. That picture to the left is the brushes and roller in the plastic bag.
Still under testing!!
Before and after pictures are great. Here you'll see the side of my jeep were I taped it off. Make sure you peel the tape off after the last coat is applied. Bringing the Herculiner to the outside of the tub is probably a good idea because then you aren't scratching the paint when you put the hard top on.
MY Thoughts
Herculiner is a cheaper alternative to a spray in liner. Done right, it's not really that messy. For the price I paid for Herculiner, I could have probably bought 4 gallons of another no name product, but then I |
Wouldnt have the name behind me, plus Herculiners guarantee. The problem I did have however was that after3 coats on the tub of my jeep I used up a gallon and didn't want to open the small container because I wanted to save it for touch-ups down the road. The Herculiner did peel, right behind where the passenger seat would be, so the only thing I could do was open the can.......(nice pic hey??) it would open without the help of a vice, hammer and a pry bar, and a good size pry bar I might add! Soooo, I can't put the lid on cause it will dry up so a 4th coat goes on, that I really didn't need. Actually to tell you the truth the gallon cans lid was hard to get off too. I'm writing to Herculiner to see what they'll do and I'll be sure to post what happens. These cans should be like paint cans easy it get the lids on and off so you can save the contents. But since that small problem I have had no problems so far so well see what happens and make sure to keep you informed.
Check out these pics as we went along
Half way done the tub on the first coat.
Lloyd stopping for a picture, that's the only time he stopped....ya right!
Lloyd getting in the corners so that she's water tight
The finished product, now I'll let it set over nite.
Why do you need those spiffy racing pedals?
The tailgate after it's last coat
Lloyd going along dabbing the brush, he like to do that cause it putit on thicker, then I'd lightly roll it over to make a nice pattern
