THE MAKING OF MY REAR BUMPER/TIRE CARRIER.
I didn't want to spend upwards of $800 for a rear bumper and something to hang my spare off of, so I decided to make my own. "Like always" you can click on the pics for a larger image.
Using 2x4x3/16" steel tube and some 2x2x3/16" square tube I started getting it together.
A little more 2x2 and a 2" receiver for the tire carrier.
Once again, for the mounts I went to our local fab shop, Hunter Offroad, and John did an awsome job. If you are in the Phoenix area and need fab work done I would highly recommend him!!
Here's another shot of the mounts, from the back side. In this shot you can see the extra bracing John threw onto my tire carrier for me. I think he hates to see something that isn't built tough !!
As you may or may not know, the rear crossmember on the CJ's isn't very thick so in order to hold up this heavy monster I had to reenforce it. I used some 3/16" flat stock for the center section and then made brackets for the ends. Worked out great.
Here it is mounted to test fit. Now I just need a little paint and throw the tire on.
Here are some bad pic's of it "done". Yeah right!!! It's done for this week, I am still planning on mounting my CO2 tank and my new Hilift jack on it "Thanks Shayne!!" I will update the site with the new addons.
