Car Toys Make for Family Fun

- Watching "Spy Kids" in the car? Just a few ye= ars ago this idea would have seemed outlandish. But now, thanks to rapi= d advances in technology, parents have a lot more ways to keep their ki= ds happy during long, boring car trips. In fact, there are new toys for= everyone including a range of innovative car communications and entert= ainment devices designed for children and adults.

"The revolution right now in cars is impacting passen= gers in a big way," says John Davis, producer, host and creator of Moto= rWeek, PBS's popular automotive series. According to Davis, sophisticat= ed electronic information and communications equipment in cars, otherwi= se known as telematics, is becoming more and more common. The new devic= es are not only evident in custom cars, but are "working their way down= rapidly" to moderately priced vehicles, notes Davis.

Options available on some cars right now include:

* Satellite radio -- for $10 to $13 a month, you can = choose from more than 100 digital channels offering music, sports or ne= ws. The service is available coast-to-coast, static-free, and you will = never drive out of range.

* Satellite navigation -- this allows the driver to c= heck on traffic jams up ahead, get directions, or a detailed trip plan.=

* Internet access -- check your e-mail on the way hom= e.

* Emergency call service -- a one-touch access to eme= rgency help, even if you can't speak.

* Voice recognition technology -- adjust the climate = control, stereo, or other devices via voice command.

"We spend so much time in our cars and telematics can= make this time more enjoyable and productive," says Davis. For adults = there are the navigation systems and Internet access, for kids there ar= e more forms of entertainment including MP3 players and VCRs. "The car = is becoming a much more active place for the family to be," he adds.
In addition to the convenience and entertainment adva= ntages, the new technology offers increased personal safety benefits. S= tranded drivers now can quickly contact emergency services, or, in some= cases, the car will even do it for them: Some models are programmed to= call 911 as soon as the air bag ejects.

Along with the new technology comes new responsibilit= y for the driver. All of these options inside a car could prove to be v= ery distracting. In fact, some of the devices are meant to be used whil= e the car is being driven, but others are not. It is up to the driver t= o take the time to learn how to use all of the systems, while the car i= s parked, so that they can be safely operated on the road.

"Everyone is looking at how to make this stuff safer,= " says Davis. In an effort to reduce possible driver distraction, car m= akers are focusing on improving and expanding the use of voice-automate= d systems, which allow drivers to make adjustments while keeping their = eyes on the road.

Distractions aside, the new options promise big advan= tages for drivers and passengers. Not only will they have access to ins= tant information and communication on the road, but the kids will be ha= ppier and quieter during those long car trips.

New Parade/Harris Poll Finds Americans Love To Drive
Safety Is Most Important Factor In Choosing A New Vehicle; Top Extras Are Premium Sound Systems, Navigation Systems

NEW YORK, NY -- -- Thirty-three percent of Americans love to drive and do so whenever they can, according to a new poll commissioned by PARADE magazine and conducted by Harris Interactive. Thirteen percent feel just the opposite and drive only when absolutely necessary.

The PARADE/Harris poll also finds that 35% of Americans put safety first when choosing a new vehicle; 21% go for practicality. Performance and price were the No. 1 considerations for 17% of the respondents. When asked which specific features were coveted in a new car, the No. 1 answer was a premium sound system (22%), with a navigational system a close second (21%) and a stolen vehicle tracking system a close third (20%).

And, even if price and performance were competitive with conventional automobiles, 39% of Americans would NOT be likely to consider purchasing a hybrid or alternative fuel vehicle; 56% would consider it.

The PARADE/Harris poll was conducted in August 2002 among a nationally representative sample of 1,011 adults aged 18 and older. The median age of respondents is 42 years and median household income is $41,800.

AUTOMATIC CRASH CALL VIA ONSTAR TO COME

Some automakers are offering integrated in-vehicle safety communications systems that assist accident victims in getting help faster.

During or after an accident, a driver can push the emergency call button on an in-vehicle communication system that connects to the OnStar call center.

The vehicle's embedded global positioning system pinpoints the exact location, which OnStar passes on to local emergency dispatchers.

Next year, General Motors will begin installing an advanced automatic crash notification system, linked to OnStar, in many of its vehicles. The system will notify OnStar automatically in the event the
vehicle is involved in a crash.

'When Are We Going to Get There?'
Kid-friendly Culinary Solutions for Long Car Rides

- With more Americans than ever driving to their vacation destinations, long -- and sometimes boring -- car rides are back. But what to pack for a car load of kids that won't mean sticky fingers, food fights and sugar rushes?

The chef instructors of The Art Institutes suggest natural sugars are the way to go. According to Joseph Shilling, the Chef Director of The Art Institute of New York City, "Stay away from 'energy' snacks -- foods with high carbs. Instead, pack dried fruits, and your children's favorite low-sugar breakfast cereal." Pack individual portions in plastic bags, so kids can control their own snack intake.

For staying hydrated, chef Shilling says, "Water, water, water. It's more effective than fruit juices and sodas which just make kids thirstier." Another trick Shilling uses with his culinary students is to suck on natural sugar cane. "The unprocessed sugar helps you hydrate naturally. Raw sugar cane is available now in most supermarkets," he says.

Another approach for snack packing is to have kids participate in the snack making advises chef Peter Adams of The Illinois Institute of Art Chicago. Adams discourages food kids can throw around the car, like Cheerios, although he acknowledges the cereal is a healthy snack.

Instead, Adams suggests a peanut butter sandwich on healthy, whole wheat bread. "I like those great cookie cutters in dinosaur, car or shell shapes. I have children cut out shapes from their peanut butter sandwiches, and pack them in small sandwich bags," he says. When they're involved in the process, they are more likely to eat the snack and less likely to use it as a missile aimed at a sibling.

For another fun treat, Adams likes sugar-free Gummi Bears candies or even better, dried mangoes and bananas. The bigger the pieces the better, says the chef, "they take longer to chew, and therefore stay entertaining longer."

With two young daughters of his own, chef Bill Niemer of The Art Institutes International Minnesota believes he's found the perfect travel food for kids. "Flour Tortilla Roll Ups are a recipe I developed for my kids," says Niemer. "You can substitute any ingredient that they prefer. Give the kids choices and you will be a hero. But my daughters' favorite one is as follows," he says:

Flour Tortilla Roll Ups

1 flour tortilla, 6 or 8 inch

1 tablespoon Ranch dressing

2 leaves romaine lettuce, finely chopped

1/4 cup grated carrots

2 slices smoked turkey breast

1/4 cup grated Swiss cheese

Heat tortilla for 35 seconds in the microwave to soften. Lay flat on the cutting board and place ranch dressing in center of the tortilla. Spread out dressing evenly over tortilla. Lay down the smoked turkey on top of the dressing. Sprinkle carrots, romaine and Swiss cheese evenly over turkey. Roll tortilla up like a burrito. Start by folding one side of tortilla half of the way to the other side. Fold in the opposite sides to the center, roll the tortilla over itself all the way to the other side.
