Searchers for the parents of Henry Bailey

Dear searchers:

Below are excerpts from e-mail about the parentage of Henry Bailey.  For me this is exciting information.  For several years I have been trying to establish a link between John and Jane (Stufflebeam) Bailey of Pickaway County, Oh.  This 1864 land petition of two daughters of John and Jane perhaps supports my speculation.  When I receive a copy of the petition I will forward the information to you.  This is how the correspondence developed:

First Correspondence

Hi Rodney,

I saw your posting on the Pickaway Co.... general web site.  Did your Henry Bailey move to Illinois by 1864?

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for the email with respect to Henry Bailey.  From the information we have, it appears that Henry, Elizabeth and six children moved to Illinois from Pickaway County, Ohio between 1853 and 1858.  After moving to Illinois Henry and Elizabeth had four more children.  A publication, "History of Shelby and Moultrie Counties, Illinois" lists as earlier settler the names of Henry and William Bailey (were they brothers )?  Our records indicate that the family lived in or near Lovingtion, Moultrie County, Illinois.

Please let us know if the above info connects to your Henry Bailey.

It is always a pleasure to correspond with another person interested in the Bailey surname.

Second Correspondence

Hello again,

It looks like we may have a connection.I   have only recently run across information on the Bailey family while researching the Stufflebeam family of Pickaway Co.

Jane Stufflebeam, probably a sister to one or both of my ancestors, Sarah Stufflebeam Eggleston and Ellen Stufflebeam Watson, married John Bailey 29 Feb 1817 in Pickaway Co.John d 30 Apr 1862 and is buried at Grenland Cem, Monroe Twp.

In 1864, a petition was filed for a land partition by two of their daughters.  It mentions the following heirs of John Bailey:

Jane Bailey, widow

children:

Mary Grindle, wife of Alexander
Sarah Radcliff, wife of Daniel
Henry Bailey of IL
William Bailey of IL
George W. Bailey of IL
Ellen Wilson wife of James of IL
Robert Bailey of Camp Chase, Franklin Co, OH
Martin V. Bailey of Pickaway Co, OH
Martha Jane Crawford, wife of Allen of Pickaway Co, OH
Elizabeth Darst wife of Ira of Pickaway Co, OH
heirs of Irwin Bailey deceased.

If this looks like a match, I will be happy to send a copy of the transcription of the document to you and the information I have on the Bailey/Stufflebeam family in OH.

Any info you may have on the families in IL would be a great help. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

We are very ecstatic today!  Yes, it does look like there is a connection from the information you sent concerning the material found while researching the Stufflebeam family.   Yes, Patrick, we certainly would like to have a copy of the material you offered.

If you would give us your mailing address, we'll mail you the print out of Henry Bailey's descendants.  We could send a gedcom file, but that would include extensive family members.

A few years ago in the Sioux City public library I found a book listing the veterans of the War of 1812.  Among them was one John Bailey who was married to a Jane Stufflebeam.  I always wondered if they were related to Henry Bailey and we certainly are grateful that you have made the connection.

Henry Bailey parents

Greetings,

In the 7/16/00 email I said I would send the information I received with respect to the parentage of Henry Bailey.  Attached to this letter are two files one a text file, the other a JPG file.  I had some trouble displaying the two files but I think the problem was within my computer.  Should you have any difficulty in displaying the information in the files, let me know and I will send a hard copy of the information.

We have some additional records not included in the attachment, one of which is a Census from 1850 (the first year the given name of family members are shown), for Monroe Township, Pickaway County, Ohio.  The census listed John Bailey, wife Jane and six of the youngest children.  Another listing is for Daniel Radcliff, wife Sarah and four children. Sarah is a daughter of John and Jane.

The information in the files are compelling enough that today I am updating my "Family Tree Maker" data base to show that John and Jane are the parents of Henry.

For me it is now to the Virginia archives to find the parents of John Bailey.  The parentage of Jane Stufflebeam should be easier as the person that supplied the files about Henry's parents has searched the Stufflebeam line for some time.

I hope you all agree that this information establishes the link between Henry and John.
