1987 brought back two of the things Camaro enthusiasts love most...350 V8s and convertibles. Other rarities made 1987 an interesting year.

First, the 350 returned for '87. Never before offered in a third generation Camaro, the 350 received the TPI setup used on the 305s (with larger injectors), and produced 225hp, down from the 240hp this same engine offered in the Corvette. This was due to different, cast iron heads and a more restrictive exhaust.

Convertibles were offered in limited numbers as well. Designed and built by ASC, these cars made big news when they first came out, yet due to their $4500 higher price than the coupes, and limited manufacturer availability, very few were actually produced. Unfortunately, 350s were not officially offered in the convertibles, but records indicate an unspecified amount of '87 350 convertibles were made when owners took their cars to ASC themselves, rather than going through dealers.

1987 Engine Lineup:

Standard, Sport Coupe: LB8 2.8 litre MPI V6, 135hp (60,439 produced)

Optional Sport Coupe, Standard Z28: LG4 305 4bbl V8, 165hp (36,845 produced)

Optional Z28, IROC: LB9 305 TPI V8, 190hp (28,370 produced)

Optional, IROC: B2L 350 TPI V8, 225hp (12,105 produced)

Other news for '87 included two new models, one of which was the LT coupe. This car was intended to replace the Berlinetta as a luxurious Camaro, but without the controversial instrument panel. The LT package included the custom interior, deluxe luggage compartment, sport mirrors, soft-ride suspension, and full wheel covers (the same rims the Berlinetta had were optional.)

The other new model was the California-only RS. Developed by production employees at the Van Nuys, California plant, they were given free reign to create a sporty, affordable, easy-to-insure package that would retail for a target price of $12,800. The end result was a 2.8 V6 Sport Coupe that added the Z28s 15 inch aluminum rims and ground effects (painted body color), a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and emergency brake lever, and an AM/FM cassette. Few options were available.
