: Fantasia Film Fest!! |
|

http://www.fantasiafestival.com/
Well we are back and I have to
say it was an amazing time at the Fantasia Film
Fest. If you have never gone, go for it! Just
thought I would give you a little taste of what
we saw, this movie had its Premiere last night.

The Roost
So you think you have seen everything
when it comes to zombie movies? Well what about
a movie that combines vampire bats that attack
anyone who happens to wonder into their barn,
with the fact that when these bats bite you, you
turn into a zombie. That is what we have in front
of us as we watch Ti West’s The Roost. Ti
seems to have written a story that has all the
basic horror genre elements and has twisted it
with an old fashion type Halloween radio show
(it’s the continuous theme in the background
of the movie). We have the four teens driving
to a wedding, seems innocent enough, but of course
no one ever wants to stay on the main hi-way,
so we delve off into the unknown backcountry.
But as we all know the backcountry always causes
problems and this time the car gets stuck after
swerving off the road to avoid “something”.
The movie of course plays tribute to American
B-movie chillers and for me this is what a horror
movie should be like. No more big budget films
with special effects and gore, its time to get
back to the days of low budge Texas Chainsaw Massacre
type films. Ti West’s film is designed to
play as if you tuned into it on a late night TV
creature-feature broadcast, complete with charming
horror host segments fronted by Tom Noonan (Manhunter)
in full Zacherley/Crypt Keeper mode! Now when
Tom Noonan does come on screen it’s a bit
of a weird feeling because he kind of takes you
out of the movie, but it was done very well at
the end of the film so I was pleased that they
added this little something extra.
The film was shot on Super 16mm and to be honest
I loved it. It gives you more of the B-movie flavour
and adds something that the crisp clean Hollywood
horrors just don’t give you anymore. The
movie overall is a lot of fun and has really picked
up a cult fan base ever since its premiere at
the South by Southwest festival. If you do get
a chance to check it out at festivals around the
world I would suggest you do so. If you love to
laugh and be frightened at almost the same time,
then this is the movie for you. Also just a warning
if you live in the country and have a bat problem
you may want to do something about it before you
end up like the teens in The Roost!
And if you are an up and coming writer or director
of low budget horror films, now is the time to
make them. Ti West’s The Roost has now been
picked up by Showtime and Vitagraphy Films in
North America, so be prepared to see it at a theatre/television
near you.

: Fantasia Film Fest in Montreal |
|
Well its that time again...nope
not the Toronto Film Fest (sooon) but the Fantasia
fest in Montreal. Some really great movies are
being screened and everyone should check it out.
http://www.fantasiafestival.com/
Not only are there
movies but there are special guests! And this
year its non other than Ray Harryhausen! On July
24, Mr. Harryhausen will hold forth on his career
and present a few of his rare early works, followed
by a screening of Jason and the Argonauts in a
new 35mm print, and concluded by a Q&A period.
Three hours with the stop-motion master, whose
special effects inspired the likes of James Cameron,
Peter Jackson, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.
Here are just a few of the great
movies that I hope to see.

Godzilla: Final Wars
What better way to celebrate
the 50th anniversary of Godzilla than to go all
the way. With 15 monsters in one single film,
Godzilla: Final Wars features all the favourites,
and the surprise bonus inclusion of the creature
from the ’98 American Godzilla (officially
renamed Zilla, so as not to be confused with the
genuine article).

2001 Maniacs
Raw Nerve,
the new horror production company formed by the
terrible trio of Eli (Cabin Fever) Roth, Scott
(Intruder) Spiegel and Boaz (Remember The Titans)
Yakin, has finally brought forth its first gorrific
feature: 2001 Maniacs, director Tim Sullivan’s
"re-imagining" of the 1964 Herschell
Gordon Lewis classic Two Thousand Maniacs!

Izo
Well really all you have to say
is... Takashi Miike.

Neighbor No. 13
Kids can be really cruel and,
if Neighbor No. 13 is any indication, Japanese
kids are particularly harsh. Throughout his youth,
Juzo Murasaki (Oguri Shun) is tormented and physically
abused by his classmates. Lead by Tohru Akai (Hirofumi
Arai), the abusers finally take this abuse way
too far, pouring acid on Juzo's face in a science
class. He is badly disfigured but his cold-blooded,
unsympathetic attackers don't seem to mind.

The Devil's Rejects
-When I first heard of this movie,
I didn't want to see it...now for some reason
I am drawn to it.
The Devil’s Rejects, Rob
Zombie’s follow-up to House of 1000 Corpses,
blasts out of the projector like a creature let
loose after being entombed for three decades,
out for blood and seriously pissed off. By accident
of timing or by design, the movie lays waste to
the recent trend toward "safe" scares
and overproduced FX extravaganzas and gets back
to the genre’s nitty-gritty. This is the
Terminator of horror films…

: Long time! |
Its
been busy!
Well what can I say, I haven't had
much to talk about since the film fest. Therefore
no updates. But now that Team America is out!!
We have a little review to get too.
But before we get to that, how about showing our
new addition to the SIN Productions crew, a beautiful
Canon XL1s Digital Camera.

As well I have created a new entrence to our upcoming
expansion. The name could change but check it
out. CMProductions.
Now the Team America Review by Will
Perkins. 8 out of 10
The creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey
Parker bring us Team America : World Police, a
political knock out blow featuring an all marionette
cast. Team America is an all American police force
dedicated to ridding the world of terrorism...
No matter the cost. As soon as the explosive credits
end we find ourselves in Paris. A group of terrorists
has a weapon of mass destruction and is planning
to destroy the city. After an extended action
sequence featuring a puppet fist fight and the
destruction of numerous Paris landmarks, Team
America is victorious and the terrorists have
been stopped. However, an even greater threat
is growing. Soon after, the team enlists the help
of actor Gary Johnston. Gary is a rising Broadway
star, and the team needs an actor good enough
to infiltrate the terrorists stronghold in Cairo.
He performs his role flawlessly and uncovers the
terrorists sinister plan. North Korean dictator
Kim Jong Il has been supplying the terrorists
with weapons of mass destruction. With the help
of left wing Hollywood stars and Michael Moore,
the diminutive dictator is hell bent on destroying
the world and with it Team America. With the fate
of the planet hanging in the balance, it will
be up to Gary to save the day.
Team America is definitely not for everyone.
If you're a fan of South Park, then this movie
will be right up your alley. Much like South Park
: Bigger, Longer and Uncut , Stone and Parker
up the ante in their never ending quest to skirt
the line of good taste. From the opening ballad
"AMERICA! F$*# YEAH!" to the numerous
slow motion puppet deaths, the film is a riot.
I've never seen such graphic portrayals of puppet
sex or violence in a movie, and probably never
will again. I was amazed at how well the puppets
worked in the film. With all the technology available,
hyper-realistic puppets could have been used.
However, Parker and Stone wanted to go for the
classic "Thunderbirds" look, and no
effort has been made to hide the strings and wires
used to move the marionettes. You are consciously
aware that you are watching a puppet movie throughout,
and it makes the film even funnier.
The movie doesn't disappoint for the most part.
There are a few weak jokes here and there, but
for the most part every funny bit is dead on.
People may be offended by the broad generalizations
and stereotypes in the film, if you're looking
for a fair and balanced opinion of the world,
you're in the wrong movie. The movie pulls no
punches, taking shots at everything from the Kim
Jong Il's insane loneliness, to Michael Moore's
weight problem. Also, much of the dialogue is
ripped right out of Jerry Bruckheimer/Michael
Bay movies. When the lines are recited by puppets
you really see how bad some of the dialogue in
those blockbusters really is.
If you object to gratuitous puppet sex, acts
of puppet on puppet violence, swearing puppets,
drunken puppets or North Korean dictators singing
show tunes... Team America is not for you. But
if any of this piques your interest... Go see
Team America, and have a good laugh while you're
at it. The movie will offend you, disgust you
and shock you, but you'll love it all the same.

: Its over already!! |

Well it sure went by quickly but
he Toronto Film Fest is over. It was a lot of
fun this year with tons of celebs and great movies
to see. Here is just some of the highlights of
the week long event.

Got to attend the Premiere Magazine Party, and
Cuba Gooding Jr. was there. As well as Richard
Roeper.

Also got to check out the SAW Party, but this
is a picture of the director and one of the stars
of the film.

Here is a little recap of the Midnight
Madness screenings we saw throughout the week.
Calvaire
Well what can you say about this movie, it was
part of the Midnight Madness showcase at the Film
Fest which meant it was going to be pretty messed
up. The film fest site had a description that
said “Calvaire is a blunt shocker that has
sparked comparisons to the holy triptych of survival
horror films: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Straw
Dogs and Deliverance. Prepare yourself as first-time
director Fabrice du Welz and co-screenwriter Romain
Protat led you down a path that gets darker with
every step.” From this I gathered it was
going to be a very cool film, unfortunately I
was completely misguided. Even the programmer
for midnight madness hyped up the movie at the
beginning, this is his job, but I mean at least
tell us the truth.
Of course anytime we see hicks and pigs we get
the typical “Oh it just like Deliverance”,
but the difference between Calvaire and Deliverance
was that one is a classic and the other is not.
Calvaire is a unique film to say the least. An
innkeeper becomes obsessed with keeping this man,
who has gotten lost, in his ‘possession’
because he is lonely and thinks this man is his
wife. The man of course tries to get away but
is crucified by this crazy innkeeper. If you are
scratching you head right about now just imagine
the crowd that was watching it.
Calvaire did have some interesting cinematography
and I will say I enjoyed many of the chase scenes
and how the camera was very shaking and blurred.
But that couldn’t save this film. The madness
crowd seemed to enjoy the end of the film but
the lead up was just too long. There was so much
useless plot development that took to long for
this type of movie. Just get to the point or we
will start to dislike each and every scene. I
was able to interview people throughout the fest
and found that they all hated this film.
“Be warned, Calvaire's brutal images will
burn into your eyelids as you lay down to sleep
this evening.” Unfortunately laying down
and sleeping is all I wanted to do after this
movie, not the kind of reaction you want for a
film that is supposed to horrify you and make
you jump out of your seat.
Kontroll
To be perfectly honest I had heard nothing about
this film and did not purchase a ticket. But I
was given a free ticket the night before and thought
I might as well check it out. Thank God I did.
This movie is my surprise movie of the film fest.
It was a movie from Hungary by a first time direct
named Nimród Antal. Don’t laugh at
the name cause this guy knows what he is doing.
It was filmed in the Budapest Metro underground,
and had the most amazing visuals I have ever seen.
I mean we live in Toronto and we have a subway
system and it sure doesn’t look like this.
It was so cool to go down and see all the tunnels
and the air control systems, because it was dark,
dirty and lit perfectly to draw out all the eerie
parts of the underground.
This movie was shot at in 20 days and they could
only go down into the subway for 5 hours per night.
It was a huge challenge I am sure to get this
movie done and the director even told us afterwards
that his lead actor had to be replaced about 5
days before shooting (this was after about 2 years
of pre-production with the original lead). The
new lead was an unknown (Sándor Badár
) and he did an amazing job. If you watch the
Sopranos he looks exactly like Chrissy (Tony’s
Cousin). The rest of the cast was also perfect
for the parts and each brought something to the
table to help add a little humor to the film.
The film itself is about these guys called Kontroll
officers, they are ticket checkers because in
Hungary it’s all about the honor system.
These guys are hated by the people in Hungary
and are always having to deal with passengers
that don’t want to pay or tell them to ‘get
lost’. The film centers on the main Kontroll
officer who lives down there 24/7 but doesn’t
tell anyone. We also have a “Pusher”
who keeps killing people by pushing them in front
of trains. What we don’t know is if the
main character is the killer or if it’s
all in his mind or what’s going on! So you
will just have to somehow see this movie to find
out. There are many other funny parts to this
movie and the soundtrack is amazing, unfortunately
you can’t get the music right now but the
director is working on it. This was a tame movie
for Midnight Madness but one of the best.
SAW
The final movie of the film festival, the true
closing gala! I had been waiting for this movie
ever since I saw the first teaser trailer. I had
huge expectations. I read a review that said it
was the best serial killer thriller since Se7en.
My god…could this be true, I mean Se7en
is one of my favorite movies and it is godly in
the psychological thriller genre. This movie was
directed and written by two guys (James Wan and
Leigh Whannell) who look like they have just graduated
from Melbourne Film School…oh wait that’s
because they have. This is their first movie and
somehow a screenplay about two guys locked in
a room has got the backing of a film studio and
two producers. This movie has got to be good if
all this money has been thrown at these students.
Now the long pause before I say if it’s
good or not…..YES IT IS. Go and see this
movie! Ok so much for my non-bias opinion about
this film, but I mean it just does everything
right. At some point’s maybe it drags a
bit but the movie makes fun of itself and has
acting that is pretty over the top which makes
it even better. The movie has great sets that
look perfect, very creepy and scary, very good
music to back up what’s going on around
the characters and they have Danny Glover, Leigh
Whannell (introducing), and Cary Elwes(Mr. Over
the top sometimes) to make sure we get at least
a bit of good acting. All of these factors put
together and mixed with a crazy doll serial killer
named Jigsaw and you have got yourself one hell
of a movie.
All of the crazy things that these guys came up
with for the “games” that Jigsaw plays
with his victims are amazing. If you have seen
the trailer you get a glimpse of a couple, and
trust me they get even better. Everything about
this movie is telling me its going to be the next
Cabin Fever which didn’t have any backing
going into the fest whereas Saw did. This is coming
to a theatre near you soon, and trust me you don’t
want to miss it. And just as a passing thought
if you are one of those people that think they
can pick the endings to movies and then sit there
and go “yes I knew that was going to happen”.
Be prepared to be totally taken by surprise when
you see this film. No one in the audience had
this one and everyone was so excited at the end
of this film, it was great to see.
I will say that these two guys have a future in
horror films if they can keep this up. Who knows
where they will go next (another horror they said)
but whatever happens Saw is going down as one
of the best movies at this year’s fest.

: The Toronto Film Fest starts Thursday! |

The biggest film fest in the world!!!
hits Toronto this week. Well maybe not the biggest
but it certainly is one of the best. Today I picked
up my tickets for the fest and did pretty good.
I got most of the movies I wanted, and the ones
I didn't I may line up in the rush lines, who
knows.
The movies that I did get tickets for are very
'unique', the only movie you have maybe heard
of is SAW, but the rest are from around the world,
and may never even hit the Toronto market.
First off Midnight Madness, the best time to see
a crazy film fest movie!

Calvaire - The best way to describe this
movie is a quote off the film fest site. "Be
warned, Calvaire's brutal images will burn into
your eyelids as you lay down to sleep this evening.
"

SAW - This is the one I have been waiting
for and of course its the last movie of the fest.
Midnight on Saturday Sept 18. It stars Danny Glover
and it is about a serial killer that likes playing
with his victims minds. It should be a great psychological
thiller/horror.

Old Boy - Lots of hype around this film,
and since it looks 'interesting' I thought I would
check it out. Heres a little
taste of what to expect: Blinding glare and violent
darkness create the dense tapestry of this tale
of incest, vengeance and wounded amorality. Punctuated
by moments of cold cruelty - an octopus eaten
alive, a severed tongue, teeth being pulled out
- the mystery of Oh's imprisonment is deftly unveiled
by Park's powerful storytelling. The dense cinematography,
stripped-bare poetic dialogue, hypnotic editing
and elliptical narrative all climax in a stunning
yet ultimately unemotional ballad recounting memories
first lost, then found and distorted.

The Brood - One of Cronenbergs first films,
I want to see it in the theatres and Cronenberg
will be there to talk about it. So this should
be a lot of fun.
Other movies I had on my list and may check out
include: Hotel, The Assassination of Nixon, Haven,
Hotel Rwanda, House of Flying Daggers, A Dirty
Shame and I (love) Huckabees.

: Alien vs Predator....whoever wins...Fox will
make millions |
SWEEET!
Well what can you say, the movie everyone has
been waiting for....yes everyone! If you don't
know how this idea came to be, go and rent Predator
2 and at the end we see that the Predator has
an Alien head as a trophy. But wait a minute
all us Alien fans out there know a Predator
would get it's ass kicked by an Alien any time!
Well now we have a movie that will finally anwser
this question right? Umm of course not, both
of them have to win or lose so the francise
can continue foreverrrrrrr. But it doesn't really
matter because we just want to see some R rated
killing, Pred's, Aliens, blood, gore, humans
getting slaughtered. Oh wait this movie is rated
PG 13 in the U.S and PG here in Canada. What
does this mean....well I can tell you we still
get a lot of action and gore so not really that
much. Just a note for any parents who want to
take their kids, since its rated PG it must
be very kid friendly right? Trust me your kid
will shit his pants if he has never seen a horror
flick before.
I was very excited about this film and I knew
most likely it wasn't going to be great, but
if it was anything like Freddy vs Jason then
it would just be a lot of fun to see these two
characters fighting eachother. The story made
sense, the puzzle pieces all fit together and
it flowed very nicely. No parts of terrible
diaologue that went on and on. Humans caught
in a maze that was filled with Preds and Aliens,
and if they don't get out of the way they will
die very quickly. Which they did.
Just so we are clear a Predator without its
stupid little gun weapon is nothing compared
to the Alien. Once it gets its gun, it can kick
some serious ass. Also Aliens are very quiet
and sneek around on its prey, whereas the Pred
is just like us, he stands there looking around
dumb-founded when the Alien disappears. The
Predator is superior and wants to kill everyone
who he thinks inferior...but wait what about
a beautiful woman who can kill Aliens too? Oh
my it must be tough chick teaming up with super
cool Predator to beat the Aliens....This is
where the movie goes downhill. Which is too
bad because up to that moment it was a good
movie that had a lot going for it.
But you know what..it doesn't really matter.
You should go and see this movie, have fun with
it and then leave thinking hey I just saw two
of the coolest monsters battling it out on the
big screen. I won't ruin the ending for you,
but damn does that Queen Alien look good!

: Tom Cruise Killing people....cool |

Well what can you say about
Micheal Mann and his amazing new movie
Collateral. Tom Cruise plays the assassin
Vincent and Jamie Fox does an amazing
job as the unlucky taxi driver who must
take Cruise around to "meet people".
I have to say that both of these actors
did a wonderful job and the small talk
in the cab was usally really funny. Which
of course was a total contrast to the
killing Cruise did after these little
talks. The film is all done on high end
consumer digital cameras and this was
because Mann thought these cameras did
a lot better when shooting in the dark
or night sequences. And he was right,
the picture takes on a whole new look
and gives all future directors something
to think about when choosing between film
and digital. Digital gives you a nice
soft look, very grainy in parts, but also
makes the film stand out on screen and
really make you feel as if you are experiencing
what is happening on screen. The gun shots
were especially cool, I don't know why
they seemed so different but I liked it.
This movie is a must see and you will
be laughing and taken back at times when
you see just how brutal Tom Cruise can
be whenever someone fucks with him. Heres
a warning If your a street punk and you
see a guy that has silver hair that matches
his suit and its like 3 am, don't go up
to him and try and get his money. Just
not a smart idea.
I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars. BTW
note to the Varsity, when having reviewers
in to a movie you should turn on the air
conditioning so people don't have to fan
themselves with their note pads.

Aug 6th Review: 8 out of 10 by
Will Perkins
In Collateral Jamie Foxx plays
Max, a veteran Los Angeles cabbie. Max is very
good at what he does. He knows LA like the back
of his hand, and will get you where you need
to go on time. It's a normal enough day, Max
starts his shift and picks up his first customer
of the night, Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith). Annie
is an attorney working on a huge case, she's
obviously in need of a break though, and Max
provides some respite with an enjoyable conversation.
Intrigued by Max, she leaves him her business
card hoping to continue their conversation in
the future. No sooner does he drop of Annie
when his next customer jumps in the taxi. Vincent
(Tom Cruise) is in real estate, just in Los
Angeles for the night, closing a big deal...
Or so he says. He asks Max if he can hire the
cab for the night. Max normally doesn't hire
out the taxi, but Vincent only has five stops
to make, so the six hundred dollars he gives
him is all the convincing Max needs. Soon enough
they arrive at their first stop, Vincent goes
up to an apartment while Max waits for him in
the alley behind the building. Max is minding
his own business, eating a sandwich when out
of nowhere the body of a man crashes onto the
roof of his cab. Vincent returns to find Max
in a state of panic, and it's soon revealed
that Vincent killed the man that fell on the
cab. Apparently Vincent is not in real estate,
he is in actuality an ex-special forces, hired
assassin. Vincent has four more stops to make
and Max is now his hostage. It's going to be
a long night.
Collateral is director Michael Mann in top
form. I was drawn in to this film right from
the get-go. The film is intense at times, funny
other times, and brutally violent throughout.
That's not to say the film is a pure action
piece, far from it. There are many action sequences
but some of the films best moments are just
Cruise and Foxx talking in the cab, both of
whom are excellent in the film. For once in
a film starring Tom Cruise I didn't look at
his character and say "Oh it's Tom Cruise
playing a character.", I looked and I saw
Vincent, a cold-blooded, charismatic hit-man.
This is one of the strongest performances I've
seen Cruise give. Jamie Foxx is no slouch in
the film either. As was the case with Cruise,
Foxx's performance convinced me he was the character,
Max the ordinary cab driver put in extraordinary
circumstances. Based on his strong performance
in Collateral I look forward to seeing Jamie
Foxx portray Ray Charles in his next film. Mark
Ruffalo who plays the detective tracking the
mysterious trail of murders is very good as
well. The part was originally intended for Val
Kilmer, and I would be curious to see what the
film would have been like with him instead,
but Ruffalo makes it work. As with all of Mann's
films, the criminals and the police are not
bumbling amateurs. They are all professional
people who are good at what they do, and the
actors in Collateral do a great job making you
aware of this fact.
Ever present in Collateral is Michael Mann's
signature visual flare. Shot on digital video
cameras, the picture is crisp and clear even
in the darkest scenes. What I really liked about
the film was the up close and personal feeling
it had. The audience will feel like they're
right there riding in the cab with Max and Vincent.
The DV cameras, and particularly Mann's shooting
style give it that feel. In the tradition of
previous Mann ventures like Thief and Miami
Vice, Collateral has that dark streets/bright
lights mood to it. The ever present glow of
lights in LA give the film a really gritty atmosphere.
One of the standout scenes in the film takes
place in an Asian trance music club. The tension
building up to the scene is palpable, and once
the action begins you'll be on the edge of your
seat. The chaos and confusion caused by this
shoot out in the club make you feel like you
are there, not knowing what's going to happen
next. My only real qualm with the film are some
of the soundtrack choices. The music is great
for the most part, as you would expect from
the man that brought us Miami Vice, but suddenly
in the middle of the film the band Creed breaks
in and totally takes you out of the scene. Maybe
it was just me, I'm not a big fan of Creed.
If you want a taught, well made action-thriller,
Collateral is definitely the movie to see. It's
well acted and executed. The two leads in the
film give the performances of their careers
thus far, that alone makes the film worth seeing.
It is a bit on the violent side, and not cartoony,
funny violence. It's brutal, no holds barred,
bone breaking violence. The violence does make
sense in the context of the story though, and
is not gratuitous at all. Will Cruise finally
get his Oscar for this role? Maybe. He's very
likely to be nominated for it. Collateral is
a smart, entertaining movie and there should
be nothing stopping you from seeing it.

The Bourne Supremacy! Review by Chris Ritvo
Lightening fast. That’s the best way to
describe The Bourne Supremacy, the sequel to
last years sleeper hit The Bourne Identity which
found the main character, the amnesiatic CIA
agent Jason Bourne, running from his own agency
on the hunt for his life, while attempting to
figure out his past. Identity leaves off with
Bourne seemingly being free of his past and
the CIA leaving him living in peace.
Supremacy picks up 2 years later. A CIA sting
goes bad leaving agents dead and Bourne's fingerprints
at the scene. A worldwide manhunt ensues for
Bourne, who is currently in India with his love
Marie, suffering from dreams of his past, attempting
to piece together his life. After being attacked,
Bourne is thrown back into the world of espionage.
He must find out who is framing him and why
before the CIA and his saboteurs find him first.
As I said before, lightening fast is the best
way to describe this movie. The story, the action,
the suspense. Director Paul Greengrass(relatively
unknown director) never lets the pace of this
film stutter, even for a second. Weaving in
and out between action sequences and story seamlessly
never loosing a beat. Matt Damon reprises his
role as Jason Bourne, and again showing that
he can hold a big blockbuster on his shoulders
and not falter a bit. Still can't see why everyone
is so surprised to see him in an action role,
he is born to play this part (hehe no pun intended).
The action sequences are terrific. This film
has one of the best car chases to be seen in
a movie (that’s right, better than Ronin),
instead of using fancy CG effects, the film
gets back to the basics, at no point do you
feel like jump ramps are being used taking you
out of the action. The use of shaky camera work
for the films cinematography is probably its
strongest point; it heightens the tension of
the film adding to the already fabulous suspense.
Well, I won't go on and on because most of
this film is suspense, but this is one of the
few instances that the sequel is better than
the original, that's twice this summer with
Spiderman, and I highly recommend it, you won't
be disappointed.

: I, Robot and Catwoman..... |
Well what can I say, I saw Catwoman tonight
and I, Robot last night. Robot was supposed
to be really bad but sometimes you just have
to go see a bad movie to find out for yourselve.
But in this case Will Smith really puts on a
cool action film about killer Robots that want
to take over the world. Hey it may sound a little
cheesy but it really is a fun summer movie to
go out and see. The special effects were cool
and the acting wasn't that bad. Smith had to
have many of his one liners while he shot and
killed these dangerous robots but thats just
what he does. Independence Day, Men in Black,
if Smith is shooting at something he has to
say something like "ya take that! Die you
mofo's!" (he never actually says anything
that bad but close). So if your looking to just
have some fun, sit back and relax to this action
movie that does what it is supposed to do...entertain.
If this is the reason you are going to see Catwoman,
its a pretty good reason. But this picture is
all you get, a nice look at Halle Berry's cleavage.
The rest of the movie is pure....crap. I mean
I can't even begin to describe how bad this
movie was. The plot, the action, the acting,
the music!!! was so bad that you wanted to tear
out your eyes. Thank god I didn't pay to see
this movie because if I did, and I am sure the
rest of the audience felt this way as well,
I would have wanted my money back. If you like
to see terrible cgi, and Halle in this stupid
costume then by all means waste you money.
Not to mention the way she becomes catwoman,
I mean dear god. This cat coughs on her and
all of a sudden she is alive again...come on!!!
Lets see what else can I say about this movie...oh
it was worse then Gigli...yes thats right! This
is by far the worst comic book movie (in recent memory), coming in
second to Daredevil. I can only hope this francise
is dead unless somehow the American people pay
money and make this movie number 1. Trust me
Canada do not bother, I, Robot or The new Bourne
movie is much better.
And my final thought on this movie is....where
the hell was the new Batman Trailer, it didn't
get shown and we got no previews at all! This
is madness!

: Anchorman! Opens Friday! |
ANCHORMAN : The Legend of Ron Burgundy
8/10 STARS
By Will Perkins
sinproductions.ca
In "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy",
Will Ferrell stars as Ron Burgundy, a pompous
news anchor at Channel 4 in 1970's San Diego.
Burgundy and his Team 4 are legendary party
animals and womanizers. Brian Fantana (Paul
Rudd), field reporter and resident man-whore.
Brick Tamland (Steven Carell) weatherman and
certified moron. Champ Kind (David Koechner)
sports guy and filthy drunk. Channel 4 is #1
in the ratings and Team 4 are veritable kings
among men in San Diego. Things run smoothly
at Channel 4 thanks to the efforts of Station
Manager Ed Harken (Fred Willard) who is more
of a father figure to Team 4, than his own troublesome
son. All is well at the station until an ambitious
newswoman named Veronica Corningstone (Christina
Applegate) joins the news team, much to the
chagrin of Burgundy and his male colleagues.
Burgundy is more interested in pursuing a relationship
with Veronica than taking her seriously as a
newsperson. Corningstone quickly makes a name
for herself, and is soon promoted to Co-Anchor.
Ron Burgundy will not be upstaged so he and
Team 4 do everything in their sexist, chauvinistic
power to embarrass and humiliate Veronica both
on and off the air. However, since their combined
IQ's are that of a small child, it's a losing
fight. Burgundy realizes that maybe he'll need
more than his perfectly coiffed hair and the
ability to read a teleprompter to upstage Veronica.
Anchorman has to be one of the funniest movies
made in the past few years. I was laughing constantly,
so hard it brought tears to my eyes several
times. Elf proved a Will Ferrell movie could
do well, Anchorman will cement his well deserved
position as the latest successful former SNL
alumni. Ferrell doesn't star as Ron Burgundy,
he is Ron Burgundy in this movie. I didn't feel
like I was watching Will Ferrell on the screen,
I was watching Ron Burgundy. He's playing a
literal amalgam of all the cheesy anchormen
from yester-year. From the strange random comments
Burgundy makes, to the constant ad-libbing,
Ferrell is top notch. The rest of the cast is
great as well. Paul Rudd, who has yet to have
a breakthrough role, really impressed me with
his comedy. Also, Steven Carell of Daily Show
fame nearly steals the show from Ferrell and
the others at times. Much like her character
in the movie Christina Applegate proves once
again that she's not just another pretty face,
she and Will Ferrell's comedic chemistry is
what really makes this film work. Main cast
aside, the cameos in Anchorman are almost worth
the price of admission. The entire "Frat
Pack" shows up for a climactic gladitorial
battle of the TV News Teams. Tim Robbins and
Jack Black also make hilarious appearances.
Imagine the best SNL sketch you've ever seen
- Now multiply that by 10 and you have Anchorman.
For some this is a good thing, and others...
Not so good. Whether you're a fan or not of
SNL, you'll like this film. Anchorman is by
no means a perfect film, but you'll literally
be laughing too hard to care about the very
few problems that show up. It has all the camp
and capers of a classic Mel Brooks movie, and
is just as silly. It is ridiculous at times,
it is stupid at times, and confusingly random
at times - but it works. It's so silly it works.
If you're in the mood for a good laugh, Anchorman
is the perfect movie to see. It doesn't take
itself seriously, and neither should you. The
director, Adam McKay and star Will Ferrell must
have had a blast writing this film, almost as
much as they did making it... And it shows.
Definitely worth the price of the ticket, and
with out a doubt the funniest movie of the year
so far.

: Spider Man 2 is here!! |
6.28.04 |
“Spider Man, Spider Man does whatever
a spider can.”
Had to start off the review with that because
it is priceless!
What can I say Sam Raimi is amazing and has
done what not many people have ever been able
to do, and that is create a sequel that is
equal or better then the original. The story
is so good that you get sucked into the romance
between Peter and Mary Jane, and almost get
mad when Peter continues to tell her…I
don’t love you. Damnit why not man!
Well I know you are all interested in the
most important part of the movie…the
Stan Lee cameo! And I have to say if there
was an award for a cameo he would win it.
Just check out this line “Look Out!”
Yep Stan Lee is always in the right place
at the right time to save a helpless woman
in distress.
Now the other fact I know all you perv’s
out there want to know…does Kirsten
Dunst have other umm wet scene. As we all
remember in the rain in Spider Man, well once
again for some reason Mary Jane gets soaked
in water again. And once again it must have
been cold out there in the bay area. That’s
all I am going to say about that.
The movie itself is perfect, the action, the
dialogue and the special effects all create
an amazing movie that will soon be tops at
the box office. This was the Toronto premiere
and I do have to say it was a typical Toronto
crowd of sitting there and watching with no
emotion. But that usually means they really
like the movie and if you make a move we will
kill you. For the kids in the audience there
were a couple of scary parts. When Dr. Oct’s
tentacles come alive for the first time, let’s
just say they make quick work of the people
around them. It’s very cool because
the camera is right in the people’s
faces as they scream then cuts to the tentacles
coming at them. They each have cameras so
it’s cool to see it from all the points
of view. All the big battles between Dr. Oct
and Spidey are very well done and of course
the subway is one of the coolest fights ever.
Now of course we all know the Spider Man franchise
was going to continue it was just a matter
of which direction they were going to take
it. They have Dr. Connor aka The Lizard and
they have the fact that Harry could follow
in the foot steps of his father. I won’t
ruin it for you, but either way both stories
will be told eventually.
So I don’t like terribly long reviews
that go on and on, so this is where I am going
to end it. If you’re a Spider Man fan
you’re going to love this movie and
your going to love the ending. So has Mary
Jane Watson would say “Go get’em
Tiger!”

: Fahrenheit 9/11 |
Michael Moore’s latest attempt to try
and convince the American people that their
President is nothing more then a fool and puppet
of the Saudi’s, which own 7 % of America
(so lets just say they have a lot of pull).
This film makes sure to give the audience what
it wants to see, a foolish Bush screwing up
lines or not having a clue as to what he should
say next. And trust me it delivers in that aspect
perfectly. But Moore also takes us on an emotional
ride from laughter to anger, from pity to pain
and from amazement to shock. We get a view into
the life of Bush pre 9/11 and after, we see
the relaxed easy going Bush hitting a view golf
balls and taking vacation. But we also get to
see his almost unknowing expression when he
is told that the U.S has been attacked on home
soil. The camera gets right into his eyes, his
dead stare, his shock, no one is there to tell
him what to do and I don’t think anyone
really knew what to do. The destruction of the
towers on 9/11 are not shown, all we get is
the sound, the screams, the people, you don’t
need visuals to know what is going on…it
is all implanted into our minds, the vivid images
of that day.
After the blackness we see the people looking
up at the sky in horror, crying, prying, and
just holding each other together.
One of the most heartfelt moments in the movie
is when we visit Flint, Michael Moore’s
home town. We talk to a woman whose family has
lived the army life, everyone is proud to protect
their country no matter what. But everything
crumbles around her as we find out her son has
been killed in Iraq. She reads a very emotional
letter and as her family sits around listening,
many start to cry. This whole incident shows
us the transition of a family who is solely
behind their President and would go to war for
him but now see that this war is based on a
myth that there was a threat in Iraq. And as
we all know, nothing has been found.
“When kids are sent over to fight in an
immoral war, they will do immoral things.”
There are many quotes in this movie and many
of them are powerful, they show us that we as
a people have to fight for what we believe in
and not let ourselves be manipulated by everything
we hear. The same could be said about this movie
of course, but I don’t know how anyone
could go into this movie liking Bush and his
government and not come out outraged at what
has been occurring.
But remember the fight is over in Iraq…America
won the war, now all we have to do is tell that
to the Iraqi people and maybe innocent soldiers
won’t continue to be killed.

: Man on Fire |
5 Stars, this movie was very
very good. It had a running time of around 2
hrs and 30 mins, but it did not drag on at all.
Denzel as always is amazing and puts on a great
performance both as the bodyguard of the little
girl and as the crazy revenge filled assassin.
Dakota Fanning, the little girl, is great. It
seems like everything she is in takes off and
I am sure she is now the most POWERFUL(lol)
9 year old in Hollywood.
Some of the parts in the movie are not for the
weak at heart, but when Denzel gets pissed don't
mess with him or he will stick a bomb up your
ass (see movie to know what the hell I am talking
about.)
In conclusion...go and see this movie, well
worth the 14 dollars it now costs to see a friggin
movie.

: HellBoy |
Before I start I would just like to give congrats to The Alamo for becoming the new Waterworld.
Costing $100 million to make and making nothing. OK..So the movie is HellBoy and its
a comic book. But people have said its the best
comic book movie yet. I thought it looked 'ok'
but since I see every movie I thought might as
well go check it out.
I won't go through all the plot points and all
that sort of stuff because I don't have that type
of time to waste. Lets just say that it had its
up's and down's. HellBoy was cool and he did fight
these monsters and assassins. But that was about
it. The Nazi Assassin guy did look really good
and I would like to see a movie with him just
killing everyone, but since we are left with HellBoy
saving the earth I just wasn't that impressed.
The ending sucked, the humor wasn't funny and
the best part about this movie was the SpiderMan
2 Trailer. So there you have it, thank god I showed
up late and didn't have to see that dumb f**k
'the stuntman' once again tell me not to download
movies. |
