The Sweet Emotions Lemonade Project
It started with an offhand remark...and blossomed into one of the most beautiful endeavors known to man.

Me:  I kind of want to sell lemonade...dressed as a goth.
Willa:  Then let's do it.
Me:  We....can!

We decided to call our lemonade stand "Sweet Emotions Lemonade" / "Happygoth Lemonade" and, many layers of black clothing, makeup and packages of lemonade later, we set up our lemonade stand.  Full of gothic sensibility, in the vacant parking lot of Messiah Church we stood proudly.  Right alongside of Center, one of the busiest streets in Omaha.

Our signs were bright and beautiful, our smiles were warm and inviting, and the lemonade was tangy, cold and delightful...And yet no one came!  People smiled as they drove near, laughing at the absurdity of selling lemonade in december...until they saw our faces.  Their looks turned quickly from smiles to disgust.  Especially the old people, many of which looked quickly and then avoided direct eye contact.  Was it Willa's cape?  My gloves?  Our sinister black eyes?  It was probably our aprons.

Happy Goth lemonade was quickly becoming Sad Goth lemonade because no one was coming to buy our sweet citrus nectar! All our customers so far had been our friends we called to come and keep our morale up.  We realized that our smiles, although very enticing, were not enough to sell lemonade.  So we became proactive, grabbed our sign and held it by the street,  and waved maniacally.  (Almost causing a few accidents).  Soon, trucks and cars full of people were honking, waving and smiling...and buying lemonade!  (Except for the old people, who still looked at us and were like, "Goddamn kids these days...")

We actually had to stop selling our lemonade because we pretty much ran out!  Our hope in Omaha was restored.  What a great place, where gothic kids can sell lots of lemonade in December.
Below are some of our customers who came to drink our lemonade:  Will, Chris, Mark, Spencer, Pat, Anne etc.  And the multitudes of people we DID NOT know!  "Why are you doing this?" many people asked.  Our reply was "We're just spreading the joy."  Among other possible replies:  "We're fundraising for Messiah Church" and "We're doing community service for poisoning innocent people."  Luckily no one asked why I was taking their pictures.

Overall, Happygoth lemonade was a rousing success, raising a whole lot of spirits (and $14) this holiday season.
Delicious, delicious spirits.
