CD ROM CD's store up to 640 Mb of data and can be used for data storage using a special CD Writer. The CD is made out of plastic with a special surface that can be "burned" with a laser. Under a microscope the CD surface would be a series of peaks and troughs, which is the equivalent of magnetic dots on discs. Clipart are images that can be used in documents. They come supplied with programs such as MS Word, or special graphics programmes like MS Publisher. Clipart can also be found on the Internet. Code is the language used in programs. The com Port is found on the back of computers. There are usually 2 Com Ports, one has the mouse connected and the other one can be used to connect other peripherals such as modems or scanners. Com Port is short for Communication Port. The Control Panel is found by clicking on the start button in Windows 95/98. It is used to change the settings for the computer and any attached devices. The CPU is the brain of the computer. There are a number of different makes of CPU. For example: AMD, Pentium, IBM. The processor speed is measured in Megahertz, and the higher the number the faster the CPU will process instructions. The cursor is the mouse pointer. It can have many different shapes depending on the computer task being performed. The hourglass cursor can often be seen when the computer is working and waiting for a task to be completed. Cut and Copy is the name given to moving information around from one place to another. The information that has been cut or copied is held in the computers memory (Clipboard) until the paste command is given. |
