  • Backup
Information stored on the computer can be copied to another location such as a floppy disc. In the event of mechanical failure or virus infection the information can then be recovered.
  • Bitmap
When the computer stores pictures the most common format is called a Bitmap (BMP). Bitmaps can be very large files, especially if they are full colour images. There are special graphic editing programmes that can save images in a different format, such as a JPG, TIFF, TARGA file. These take up much less space but are not the same quality as bitmaps.
  • Browsing
When using the Internet to move around different web sites and pages it is known as browsing. To browse the Internet you must use a browser programme such as Internet Explorer or Netscape communicator.
  • Bug
A bug is the name given to a problem that exists in the programming of software. The year 2000 bug was one that caused older software to handle dates incorrectly. Bugs can be fixed by altering the programme and then testing to see if the fix has worked.
  • Byte
A byte is made up of 8 bits, or chunks. The easy way to remember a Byte is to think of it as a single character. Click to find out more about
